Happy Hour is ruined tomorrow

I was all settled in to do a signing tomorrow at 9am. Fine, perfect, on the road after the signing and on the way to Hyannis, Cape Cod for some debauchery over the weekend.
Hotel, all set, Cape Codders ready (that's Cranberry juice and vodka), sun and fun.
Then I get another call to do a signing after 2:30pm. Should I take it, no, yes. Fee was good from a very good company, (checked it out on Notary Rotary) Well, maybe I can squeeze it in.
Get in and get out quick, in time for happy hour. Then, I get a late call that my 9am is being moved to 4pm. Not good, not good, meaning stuck in traffic with the rest of Massachusetts trying to get into Cape Cod. My friend advised me though, "this is the business you have chosen, you idiot"

Sometimes its better off to let those last minute ones go. I've found they end up being more of a pain than they are worth. Last year I feel like I let the whole summer slip away by taking jobs that interfered w/my summer plans. I kept saying to myself & my kids, well maybe tomm or next week. However, in Aug my then 1.5 yr old got real sick & was in Children's for a month & there was no more "tomm or next weeks." Its hard to pass up the work sometimes, esp. when its slow, but life is too short to pass up too. Now if I have plans, I stick to them & don't feel guilty when I have to pass up some work. Anyway, have fun on the Cape. I'm on the South Shore in MA & would not give anything to be stuck in Cape traffic on a Fri. Good Luck ;-)

SReis has said it all. Life is too short to let these "last" minute undertakings rule our lives. I too have found these last minute, rush, gotta do assignments to be major pitas.

Happy Hour

I most sincerely apologize for my lack of sympathy for your inability to get to the "Cape Codders" before Happy Hour.
I plan on having a nice German lager by the campfire here in New Jersey's own Cape, that being Cape May. I will not however be consuming any beverages named after the location I am staying.

Ready! Set! R e l a a x . . .

Have fun. Don't forget about the umpteen million faxbacks!

My husband and I traded a week at the Oregon Coast for a week on Cape Cod, a few years ago. We spent one whole day getting there from the airport in Providence, RI. Beautiful coast, horrible traffic getting there. You have my sympathies!

I NEVER let work interfer with my tee times!!! Since I am retired and can plan my days and nights, if I get a call for a closing which would interfer with my tee time I just tell them I can't do it at that time but at a later time if that can be arranged. Just thought I would throw my 2 cents in.

Thought I was the only one here who valued my personal time more than taking a last minute assignment.....I find the last minute ones are nothing but trouble.

I also try to make plans with friends no more than about 24 hours prior so that I don't have to cancel out on them at the last minute. You can wind up with no friends at all if you keep doing that...it gets old.

Your Happy Hour is ruined tomorrow be cause you allowed

someone or something ($$$)n get in the way of your down time. You won't alter your print, travel or signing fees - why allow this?
Suffice to say, I have strong personal feelings about letting work interfere w/family and friends when I have distinct plans. I have let work get in the way and missed some celebrations but never again. Someday you will understand and change your perspective if you are lucky and treat yourself right.
Grab whatever moments you can, enjoy to the fullest so you will have meaningful memories. Life is too short!

I totally agree with everyone else. My son is being deployed at the end of this month. He was supposed to come home today and tomorrow, but his wife can't get off work so, they aren't coming. Yesterday, I gave up part of my EOM to go see him! My 15 year old son and I will be flying to Jacksonville, FL to see him for nearly a week and the bonus is - we will see him for his 20th birthday!! My business is down and I will struggle next month, but there is no replacement for getting to see my son before he deploys for 6-7 months!

It wasn't the last minute signing that messed him up, it was the 9am switching to 4pm. So it was one he had already committed to. Although when they try to change last minute, you do have the option of saying "Sorry, that time is already booked!".

That's one of the best perks of this job. If I want to work, I work. When I don't, well you know the rest. Like everyone one said. Life's too short to be a workaholic. I've cancelled many a signing because the SS/TC changed the original appointment time. Sometimes because of schedule conflicts, others because of personal time conflicts. And sometimes because the borrower's were being a pain in the butt changing times.
You work for you, set your priorities and stick to them.
