Interesting nautical alternative to real estate

Recently saw an interesting feature on the local news. It appears that someone purchased one of the Thimble Islands off the coast of Branford, Connecticut with the intent of building a house on it. He/she ordered a modular home with the intent of having it delivered and constructed on the island...only to find that construction was not possible on the island. I am not sure if the problem was the result of construction or zoning problems.

However, the owner came up with a creative alternative. He/she had the house built on a barge and towed to the island...where it is docked. creates an interesting real estate tax question as to whether it is taxed as real estate or or as personal property as a boat. Either way the homeowner has a beautiful new house on Long Island Sound...literally.

Saw an item on TV last night about something similar being done in Holland. They have a whole community of beautiful homes built on floating platforms to protect against floods. When the floods come the houses just rise with the water and no more flooding of the homes themselves.
