Is it me? notary class of April, 2007 is just
getting their taste of the problems with the industry? And the class of July 2007 is looking for answers?

Some areas have made it easier to take the class and test. When I took it almost two years ago, I had to drive 150 miles for it. Now there is a class available 10 miles from me.

Classes are available online. You don't even have to leave your home!

Yea but you still have to drive somewhere for the test. Or do they allow that online as well?

If notary, then I spoke too quickly. I thought you were talking about NSA or NNA classes. Sorry.

I THINK they had switched over and were talking Notary. We can take the 6 hour class test online, I just did my reup thru NotRot all online.

Re: I see tht we are being over-run with new people posting, so
In Calif, there are two issues. One is the new requirement for a 6-hr class that can definitely be done on-line. (In fact, I think Harry offers an approved course right here.) The NNA certification test can be done online, too, but the actual test for the notary commission, I believe, is still an in-person, proctored exam. (My commission expires again in a little less than a year, so I guess I'll be finding out for sure before too long.)
I didn't get my original notary training from the NNA, but it's my understanding that they always arrange to have the attendees take the proctored exam for their commission the same day as the class. I'm sure this is a convenience for those who have had to travel some distance to an offered class, but I sure wish it wasn't so. By the next day, they've probably forgotten 50% of what they were taught and after three days, it's probably closer to 75%. And I don't think I want to know the percentage of newly commissioned notaries who never again pick up a notary handbook to review and refresh their memories!
Does anyone know if they are now trying to provide the NSA training and notary training in the same day? That might explain why we are getting so many uninformed comments and questions. Impossible to cover everything in one -- or even two - days, imho. So we end up with wave upon wave of the same old very basic questions, day after day. [Sigh.........]

Re: I see tht we are being over-run with new people posting, so
No way would they combine the classes... less $$$ in their pocket from the notary mill.
It is my understanding the proctored STATE exam is open to anyone who arranges to go .. you sign in sep'ly and pay sep'ly ... xyz leaves the building and only the proctors are there
let me know if this is no longer correct..... was a few years ago

Re: I see tht we are being over-run with new people posting, so
You may be right about the separate, open tests. When I got my first commission, I didn't go to an NNA class (lucky guess at the time...), so that was somewhat conjecture on my part. As for them having separate classes for notary and NSA training.... well, all I can say is "WHAT WAS I THINKING????" :> Thanks.

nope!
Misty- it’s not just here that we are seeing an deluge of newbies but companies such as mine as well- the recruiting applications are up 10 fold. I normally barely even read the applications if i can tell the notary is new- i have a few clues on ours other than the # of closings that they have done that tell me the level of experience an applicant has. At this point we will only use notaries that are experienced and we have a relationship with. It's time to batten down the hatches and stick with the long standing relationships we have developed over the years. In the long run only the experienced professionals will survive, you and i both know that. All these newbies will fall by the wayside once they realize this isn’t the "easy" work the NNA advertises and go get their job back at Wal-Mart.

Re: nope!
I agree Elayne I always check and see how long they have been a notary, and many a time they are new and are through the NNA. That sends up a red flag.
I have very occasionally used new notaries, but I have had a "feel"about them from reading their profile and talking to them. In fact one of the "new"notaries a couple of years ago is one of my best signing agents now.
