OT: Computer memory
I have a friend who needs computer memory and I know I bought memory online at a site that was recommended by another notary either on this forum or another one, but I can't remember which site it was. Anyone know which is the best site for memory?

I just sent her an e-mail to ask her. But I was just checking me e-mails and I got one a few days ago from SA Technologies advertising sale on computer memory, I believe that is the company I got my memory from. But I will find out what Krissie needs and post the info in hopes you know of something better.
The only thing I know at this moment is what she e-mailed which is:
"> My computer has basically self-destructed. I spent $100 and about ten > hours on the phone with tech support while they kept doing the same things > over and over again to find there's nothing wrong with it. So I have the > choice of three things -- spend $179 on memory in hopes that it will fix > it, wipe it clean and reinstall, or take it in and see if the hard drive > is funky. > I am Not Happy. Youl know what it's like to work on a computer > non-stop, for two and a half days now, and the experts have no idea what's > wrong. And I hate the thought of the hassle of wiping everything clean > and finding it doesn't fix anything. >

A good place to buy memory cheap is www.tigerdirect.com
best to know what type of HD it is, SATA or ATA.. SATA are usually newer comps and ATA is well older.. that's in most cases

$179 memory is outrageous
and wiping a HD clean is unnecessary. I don't have time now, but if she does a right click on "my computer" to see what kind of processor the computer is running, I can tell what type of memory it uses.

Re: $179 memory is outrageous
I thought $179 for memory was outrageous as well Andy. If I don't hear back from her tonight I will call her tomorrow. She is lost without her computer, she is an author and is working on a book and she does not need to lose anything.

Re: $179 memory is outrageous
Sylvia, if this were my computer and I had a bunch of work on it, I would go purchase a new harddrive, hook it up as the main hard drive, slave the old hard drive, reinstall the operating system on the new hard drive and access the old data.
Unless her memory has gone defunct she doesn't need new memory. Her description of her computer's ailment is kinda ambiguous. Tell her not to let the kiddos at the computer places reinstall her operating system on her old hard drive. Spend that extra few bucks and slip in a new one so she can salvage her data.
Just my .02.

Try www.Pricewatch.com
Brenda, when my pc started to go south, I did exactly what you suggested -- or maybe I should say I had my best friend's husband do it for me. I now have the contents of my old hard drive copied onto the new laptop. (Actually, we used an external hard drive unit and swapped out the actual hard drive. Worked like a charm.)
Sylvia, I used www.pricewatch.com when I bought my previous pc and the mega monitor I used with it. I was told about it from an IT guy I used to work with. It's basically a list of websites selling virtually any kind of hardware or software you can think of. You can sort the info various ways and there is a rating system for the suppliers, similar to ebay. (I found someone local on there, so I was able to go pick it up the same day, but shipping info is also shown.)
Unfortunately, when it was time for me to shop for a laptop, I couldn't remember the name of the website which was in my favorites on my old hard drive -- which I couldn't access at the time... ;> Fortunately, I still got a pretty good deal on my laptop by checking the ads in the weekend paper. Best of luck to your friend!!

Just bought one Gigabyte DDR2-533 PC2-4200
from Tiger direct for $19.99 after the rebate. Took a week in transit and no problem.

Tiger Direct isn't always a bad choice
Only issue I've encountered with them was with their refurbished computers. Heard many people that like them and others that didn't get such a good deal. As for prices with the parts, great deals!
