OT - Lose weight
This is not an advertisement, and I have no interest in the website - I just want to share the information. It is important to look as good as we can in this business, and if you want to lose weight, take a look at the Kimkins low-carb way of eating, which was featured recently in the magazine, Woman's World (there are guys who are doing it as well). I am following it now, and it is great! http://www.kimkins.com/

Re: OT - Lose weight - I discovered what my main problem was
I nibble on food during the day but eat a meal before going to bed. This means that the meal is simply turning in to fat. Also, I wasn't getting enough water. I guess our body retains water if we don't drink enough of it.
In the first week of June I learned this from my doctor. I brought it up to her because I was concerned. I was walking literally everywhere and made it a point to walk my local track for 40 minutes a day, yet, I barely lost any weight. My doctor checked everything out and besides being overweight, I'm healthy! No high blood pressure..... no high cholesterol..... no excessive sugar.
Yesterday when I went back to my doctor to see if anything changed, I learned that I lost 7lbs since my last visit!! All I had to do was start eating during the day and not at night.... drink 8 glasses or more of water.... and continue my walking pattern.
So now I have a "7 O'clock rule": I am not allowed to eat anything after 7PM. Also, I think I'm going to start running to borrowers to lose a little extra baggage. I figure I'll do it like on those commercials where the mother is jumping on trucks..... swinging off posts.... and running on the highway to catch her kids because they forgot their lunch.
Just thought I'd share my personal experience. Have a great day!

I weightlift constantly, all day long; lift 220 pounds every time I get up. How long do I have to keep that up before I start shedding pounds?

Ditto!
I started a regimen of drinking a ton of water & not eating anything after 6PM several years ago with great results. The reason my cutoff time is earlier than yours, Korey, is due to the fact we're normally in bed by 9PM & the best results (not scientific fact, but what I've been told & my own experience) occur if you fast for 3 hours before bedtime.

Korey, if you are walking you are also building muscle which is heavier than the fat you are losing.
I looked at your website. It looks great. Very professional.

This is a site you have to join and pay monthly and they tell you what to eat, right?
I did a low carb diet about 4 years ago. I lost 60 pounds and have only gained 14 back. I am going to start again after Memorial Day. Trying to watch the sweets and eat more fruit instead of chips.

There is a one-time fee of $60 and a great deal of support through information on weight loss, diet and forums to share information and ask questions. Many people find the forums addictive because of the support they receive. For those of you over 50, there is a special forum where many people over 250 lbs are losing weight quickly. http://www.kimkins.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=101&func=view&catid=524&id=167130
I began 6/12 at 190 lbs and now weigh 174 lbs. I gained weight due to medications for a brain injury, and found it difficult to lose weight until I discovered Kimkins. I am 5’ 9” and my goal is to reach 140 lbs by September 15.

Re: OT - Any advice on stopping those night time cravings???
For those of you not eating after dinner time. I do just fine all day and then at night I get so hungry and I eat. It's terrible and has been an ongoing battle for years. I only need to lose 10-15lbs, but I have needed to lose that since after my last child was born 18yrs ago - LOL! Any tips would be great. I try drinking water, chewing on ice, eating just veggies, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy but nothing stops the cravings. Thanks!

Oh boy have I tried the cold turkey route. I admit it I am weak! I always joke with my hubby that I wish someone would invent a "sponge" pill that I could just swallow and would expand in my stomach making me feel full. Wouldn't that be ideal?

Re: OT - Any advice on stopping those night time cravings???
I think it's just habit to eat junk food all evening. I'm not really hungry. I do it so often that just turning on the TV is the trigger for wanting something to eat or drink.
A friend of mine said it's a good idea to find something else to do that fills that time. If turning on the TV is my 'trigger', I do something else. Like walking, riding a bike, going to the gym, reading a book, calling a friend, writing emails, (reading NotRot!), etc. It doesn't always work, but it breaks the cycle of the night time binge eating triggered by something you do every day.
I'm interested in the comments from people who drink a lot of water. I really fall short in that area. Can't seem to make myself drink 8 glasses of water a day.

Re: OT - Any advice on stopping those night time cravings???
It was hard at the beginning to drink 8 glasses of water a day. However I forced myself to do it and now I can drink from 1/2 gallon to 1 gallon of water a day.
I should point out too that my doctor recommended I take Alli, which is Xenical (the only difference is that Alli is less potent then prescription Xenical). After reading the side effects of Alli, I decided that I didn't want to take it. I'd rather do it the "old-fashioned" way (exercise and a healthy diet).

Re: OT - Any advice on stopping those night time cravings???
I tried Xenical several years ago...for about 30 minutes. The side effects are awful IMHO. Wise choice to avoid it.
I prefer to lose weight the moderately low to low carb way...and have been working on it since last November. Very slow coming off but I have lost 30 lbs. Lot of water drinking, too.

Re: OT - Any advice ~~~~~~~~ try this.......
my nutritionest asked me to try something that would sound different.. but it works....
stop drinking any liquid 10-15 min every meal and wait one hour after the meal... drinking liquid causes 2 things... you might not eat enough to stay satisified cuz uyou are filling up on water but it also causes the body to speed the food thru your system thus making you hungry....
i tried it and dang it works... you also get more water in cuz in btwn the three meals you drink your water/liquids..........

Re: OT - Any advice on stopping those night time cravings???
Most of what people snack on are high in bad carbs. Try cutting them out and sustitute fruit or protein (deli turkey, part-skim mozzarella cheese sticks, or a protein shake). On Kimkins, I eat 30 less gr of carbs a day, 30 or less gr of fat and 80-90 gr of protein, and I am never hungry.

You might try picking up a fun book that someone sent me. It's called Mindless Eating and it's by Brian Wansink, PH.D.
It talks about why we eat more than we think, and how we make more than 200 food related decisions each day..90% of which we may not even be aware of. It's an intriguing and entertaining book, and great dinner conversation...LOL.

Are you skipping breakfast?
If you don't eat breakfast and don't eat enough during the day, you are practically guaranteed to get hungry in the evening and want to eat everything in sight! I lost 10 lbs in Feb & March of this year by just tweaking a few things. [And, at risk of wading into the TMI zone , I'm post-menopausal and on medication that makes weight loss difficult even though I've always been fairly health conscious. And I've not put any of it back on.] What I did is what some call the "no white food" diet, or low-glycemic index diet. (I've researched this stuff a lot over the years...)
They key with carbs is to carefully choose the kinds of carbs you eat. If you replace processed foods with whole foods (i.e. add lots of vegetables and fruits - except the ones real high in sugar) you will get more nutrients, more fiber, your digestion will be happier, and you will feel fuller. I eliminated pasta, rice, bread, and most potatoes (yams are allowed and good for you). Be very careful of some of the low-carb diets that have you eating too much protein. There has been more research showing some negative health effects of some of the Atkins style plans over time. It can be hard on some organs. (BTW, I've since added in a little bit of some of those things on occasion, but try to keep it to whole grains.)
The key to not getting those late night cravings is to maintain a stable blood sugar. the water and ice couldn't hurt, but the other things you mentioned will likely just make you jmore hungry. Foods that convert to sugar quickly (which includes nearly everything that is processed) tend to spike your blood sugar, then drop real low, which is what gives you the cravings. I snacked on carefully selected protein bars, eating 1/2 (or some other equivalently measured protein snack) whenever I was hungry. (That was sometimes 4-6 snacks a day! Those are what keep me going in between appointments, too, so I'm no longer tempted to grab food from the drive-through...) If you get the right ones (some are just as bad as candy bars), they won't convert to sugar right away and will keep you satisfied. It only took me a few days to lose the cravings for carbs, which used to be my favorite things to eat. If you don't eat enough food during the day, you will never lose weight because your body's metabolism will slow down to compensate, shifting into starvation mode and trying to conserve energy.
BTW, I'm wary whenever I hear of a program that says you don't need to exercise. That's a continuous struggle for me with the crazy schedule we all tend to have, but it's so critical to maintaining good health. The potential health risks that are reduced by regular exercise are too many to count and the list keeps growing. I have an exercise DVD I do in my living room and I get out and walk whenever I can. I don't do it as often as I should, but I'm making progress. I wear a pedometer nearly every day lately and am trying to gradually increase my average, with a goal of 10,000 steps/day. It definitely helps with the weight loss, too!! (The exercise and even the 10 lb (actually now 11 lb) weight loss has also given my energy level a much needed kick in the pants!!)
I'm working on losing another 10 lbs, so I'm back on the program. Feel free to PM me if you'd like more info, including some good choices for protein bars. And good luck!! HTH!

The following is from a Kimkins forum:
People seem to get bewildered that Kimmer's plans don't generally have a set limit for calories, or for grams of fat or protein, or for ratios. That is deliberate.
There is no set calorie limit on Kimkins. We are different sizes, ages, genders, health status, and activity levels. A 380 lb. person can lose on far more calories than a 180 lb. person will. A man can handle more calories than a woman. Younger people or more active people will usually burn off more calories, too. What might be too much for me might not be enough for you. So, Kimmer does not set a specific calorie number. The thing you will need to discover is what is a good number for YOU.
Boot Camp, meant to be the strictest plan, will usually end up in the 500 - 600 calories a day range. (That's why it is not best for beginners.) K/E or Kimkins allow for more, since protein is not limited in portion size, and more fat is allowed on Kimkins, at your discretion. There you might generally end up in the 700 - 900 range. But, it is certainly possible to stick within the guidelines and lists, and still end up with higher calories than that, or even lower, depending on choices made.
We say to 'eat whenever hungry, and only when hungry, to the point of being satisfied but not overly full'. At first, that will probably be a LOT, but as long as you stick to the list of allowed foods, and take your extra from the lean protein list, you really will do just fine!
As appetite drops (and it will!), then pay attention to that, honor it, and adjust your eating accordingly. You will be amazed at the difference, if you can break out of the mindset of what you 'must' eat, and give it a chance! Don't force low calories --- but don't be afraid of low calories, either.
Carbs, however, are strictly limited. Twenty grams of carbohydrate is the top limit, but people usually find they have LESS hunger, fewer cravings, and faster losses with carbs down in the range of 8 - 12 grams a day. (Cravings are made worse by carbs.) Up to 20 is allowed, though, no problem.
Fat should be minimal, but there is no exact number. It is 'just enough to make your menus work." What is 'just enough' to you?
Lots of people report their best losses come when fat grams are in the 20 - 40 grams a day range, preferably under 30, but Kimmer has set no rule about that. Controlling fat intake has the biggest impact on calories, since fat has over twice the calories per gram of protein or carbs. It is an area where little changes can make a nice difference!
Protein should be adequate to your needs and appetite, but not excessive. A range of 60 - 90 grams a day is generally considered adequate, but, again, that varies with the things previously mentioned.
As you proceed to eat 'cleanly' and stick to the lists, you will find your own 'sweet spot' where you are satisfied with both your eating and your rate of loss.
You can use the FitDay website to keep track of the grams of carbs, fat & protein that you eat.
