OT - Memory

What can I do with some old memory? Computer memory wise guys! I upgraded my laptop to 2 GB, and have my old ones hanging around.

Reduce, reuse, recycle.
Make earrings or pendants or badge of some kind, Then grow chest to display your willingness to keep out of landfill.

or...you could make a sculpture suspended in midair whose delicately balanced parts can be set in motion by air currents

I like this idea! But if you're not of a frame of mind to re-use it, if there was ever any sensitive information on it, you might want to consider taking a hammer to it, then finding a place that will recycle what's left (i.e. keep it out of the landfill). There are places that specialize in recycling of electronics to retrieve the elements (platinum, ??) or whatever might be retrievable from circuit boards. (Goodwill used to, but I'm not sure if that's true any more.) I'm sure you know that deleting doesn't completely wipe data from memory storage.

Re: OT - Dynamic RAM forgets info when it is turned off.

The kind of memory that one would replace to obtain 2 GB of memory is dynamic RAM, also called DRAM. This kind of memory loses all information within a second or two of being turned off. Perhaps you wonder if I really know what I'm talking about; that's always wise with stuff you read on a computer. To establish my credentials, look at this patent application:

http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PG01&s1=Gerry.IN.&s2=Ashton.IN.&OS=IN/Gerry+AND+IN/Ashton&RS=IN/Gerry+AND+IN/Ashton

By the way, some kinds of computer memory are called latches. It isn't quite the same as DRAM, but still demonstrates I know a few things about computer memory.

"Memory" as Written by Andrew Lloyd Weber...

...& performed by Barry Manilow circa 1983:

"Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost his mem'ry?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan"

Wait a minute! Are you talking about computer memory? Never mind!

Re: "Memory" as Written by Andrew Lloyd Weber...but WAIT!!!!

Dennis....SIR!...you tread on MY territory...you don't think that I would let it go by without making a contribution...(in my best FM Radio voice)..."and now...for all the lovers out here, here Dino with Memories are made of this"

Sweet, sweet memories you gave-a me
you can't beat the memeories you gave-a me

Take one fresh and tender kiss
Add one stolen night of bliss
One girl, one boy
Some grief, some joy
Memories are made of this

Don't forget a small moonbeam
Fold in lightly with a dream
Your lips and mine
Two sips of wine
Memories are made of this

Then add the wedding bells
One house where lovers dwell
Three little kids for flavor
Stir carefully through the days
See how the flavor stays
These are the dreams you will savor

With His blessings from above
Serve it generously with love

The "Doc"tor will see you now
