Regarding my original post - What to do?
First off I don't appreciate you guys saying that I'm unprofessional - I would have gone out but as I explained earlier I take meds when I go to bed and no one would have wanted me on the road driving with that. I don't feel I have to explain this to you but you are bashing me for something. I went to the borrower's house, the docs were not there and so I drove home to print them. It's not my fault the file was corrupted and I don't live near a kinkos or staples. I went out of my way I believe. She was my second closing that night. Also, I do have a FT day job and yes I choose to do this business but it is my business and there are other notaries around that they can call. I believe I am professional and I will jump through hoops if I have too. I closed a loan for this woman before and I was trying to be accomodating. I in fact closed the loan yesterday. She told me when I showed up she was in bed too. It was more convenient for her for me to do this yesterday as she has a small child at home that was in bed also. You can bash me all you want but I've been in this business for 3 years and I believe I have done a great job. I have people requesting me over and over and also it is my business so if I choose to not take a closing after 7:00 p.m. that is my perogative. I am up at 5:00 a.m. every morning to get my husband off to work and then I'm in work at 8:00 a.m. Last week I was out everynite doing closings - some two a night and home by 9:00 in bed and up at 5:00 a.m. So if you want to call me unprofessional that's your choice. I will not give this business up because I enjoy what I am doing. I've spoke my piece!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not fault you at all for not going back out. There have been many times that I have had to tell Title that I could not cover the closing because the docs were not delivered on time. As someone else said, they do book you for the entire evening but for that specific time, give or take. I'm shocked by people's responses to you re: this matter. I had a very similar circumstance where I arrived at b's home & docs not yet delivered but were still on Fed Ex truck. Good thing I didn't wait around because docs were not delivered till the next morning. Title wanted me to drive back to office (over 1 hr), print docs & return. Well, thankfully, borrower said NO WAY. They didn't feel like closing at 10pm, and frankly, neither did I. Any reputable title co./ss knows the business & understands situations like these, and if they don't then your better off not dealing w/them anyway. As for the "available evening" discussion, I frankly think people need to get a life & mind their own business. Why do you care what she posts, let her deal with it when the co's call & she can't book after 7pm.

I agree
The company hired you for a closing at a specific time. They did not hire you to drive out, no docs, go home & print, and then drive back out @ 9:30 in the evening when the docs finally show up. Sounds like they got your whole evening for the price of a closing and that's just not right. If they couldn't leave you an after hours phone, then it appears they don't really care either.
Saying that, I have companies that use me as their primary closing because I will go to great lengths to get it done and would have done it in this case - but not for a company that is new to me.
And the 9:30pm delivery - What's with that???? My UPS drivers are usually in bed by then. Again, if the title company couldn't think enough to send the docs overnight, morning or afternoon delivery, then let them deal with it. And all to save a $25 print fee? Sounds like they sent them ground delivery. - how cheap is that?
And if you are on meds and can't drive - I do not want you out on the road with me. You were right to stay home. :-)

Re: I agree
I don't agree that the hiring entity 'owns' you for the entire evening. It sounds like your original appt was for maybe around 6pm. Taking an assignment at 6pm does not obligate you to do the signing at 10pm. Maybe some of our posters are late nighters, but I am not one of them and it sounds like you aren't either.
I'm not a 'hobbyist' in this business, but I don't believe in going to strangers homes at 9 or 10pm or later either.

I basically agree with Mary - if she didn't want to complete an appt. later than the scheduled time she wasn't obligated to do so although it appears she attempted to do so. Depending on the circumstances - the attitude of the borrower, the distance, my schedule and most importantly my client, I might have gone back again - perhaps not.
Why is Mary the one that was raked over the coals here and not the person that didn't schedule the package for timely delivery? What about the people who all went home for the evening without gviving a contact number knowing that all their closings weren't completed for the evening?

I agree with Sue but let this be a lesson to any poster with
a question....Mary's original question had zip to do with the appointment time and everything to do with the date of the docs. Mary was only laying a foundation for her question but everyone centralized upon her "lack of responsibility" in leaving the house beyond her comfort time zone. Folks need to think their questions through completely because with all the experience that this forum holds...replies can go to the moon and back.
