yes the can and do cuz

most ss require a w9 form to be filled out... if you do not want to use your ssn (not ss btw) get a fed ID # as the w9 requires this information.

I'm am reading that the ss wants a copy of the agents ssan

card. If that is the case, then H**k no, I will not send them a copy of it. I will include it in my W-9 (although I do use an EIN and encourage everyone else to do the same). However, if they want a COPY of my SSAN and/or my DL...I will send them a redacted copy of each with information blacked out, i.e. SSA number, DL number, DOB, address, etc.

I would check and see WHY they need a COPY of your SSAN card. I don't even provide it to my MD. When they request it for their "records", I refuse and advise them that per my SSAN card, the SSAN is NOT to be used for identification purposes and advised them to make up a number if they MUST have a number. But again, this is JMHO. I'm not a lawyer, although I have see one portrayed on TV and do not give legal advise. Yada Yada Yada

Re: I'm am reading that the ss wants a copy of the agents ss

You know on a slightly different note the company California Professional Signing Group has been calling me for the past month insisting they need a new copy of my W-9 even though I gave them my information once already. I have only ever done one signing for them and was paid for it last year. When I pressed them to know why they needed it so urgently they said they had to keep it on file in case they ever called me again. Since I knew this was not the case I declined to give it to them unless we were doing business together again. The person who has been calling me became very upset and practically insisted I fax over the W-9. I again politely said no unless I heard a reason for it being so critical.

Is there a reason for them to be provided with this information once more if I'm not currently working for them?

Thanks.

Kate

There is no reason for them to need an 'updated' W-9 even if you ARE currently working for them, unless... anything on it has changed.

Them's the kind of folks you don't wanna work for.

I just thought it was strange the way she would not take NO for an answer. She called me at least five times and was very angry that I did not drop everything and send it to them. I'm still shaking my head over the whole situation. I did not ever send it. It was just too weird.

Unless there's a new law denying freedom of speech I think you can ask for anything you darn well please.

It is OK for them to ask, but it's also OK for you to decline to provide it.... I'm not even sure what it would prove - my SS card is 45+ years old, and my current signature doesn't look anything like the one on that relic....

I suspect they're asking for a copy of the card to prove that you're actually registered. All they really need for a W9 is either your SSN or your EIN. If they demand more than that, it's time to walk away.
