Seal touching any writing or lines

I had a closing in an attorneys office yesterday which included a grant deed. The notary in the office took care of the deed because of an urgency to record it. I looked at the paper and her seal was over some of the wording. I thought our seals are supposed to be free and clear of any lines or words. I asked the attorney and he said it's done all the time. Humm.. Does it matter or not????

Depends on the recorder - some are finicky, others don't care.

Regardless, the seal should always be clear of the wording. Sometimes there's not enough real estate available on the document, in which case a loose certificate is called for.

On the other hand, if there's plenty of white space in the notarial area and the notary is stamping over the document text, you're probably dealing with an idiot...

Snoopdog that is in the California Handbook. However I occasionally record documents for a fee and I have seen the SD recorder not enforce that rule.

You're in Mississippi, look it up in the handbook.

I can't stand it when the big blank area for the stamp has the word "seal" in it, and then the "seal" obscures something in the stamp. Grrrr.
