Suggestion

It's the little things that make many signings go smoothly, I've learned.

The more I got into reverse mortgage closings, the more I encountered the phenomenon of the cluttered dining table. Oldphartz like me, it seems, just eventually run out of space to put unread magazines, unframed pictures, unrepaired gimcracks, unfinished notes, unopened mail, and so on, and eventually it often winds up semi-permanently on the dining table. Or, the signer is a neatfreak and the dining table is a display of his/her creativity.

Consequently, in my confirmation call to the borrower, I've learned specifically to mention that we will need an entire table to close (unfortunately, if I don't emphasize an entire table will be required, we some times wind up with just a couple of cleared islands).

It's worked wonders since I started doing that. I do wonder, though: Have any of them found their late husband's long-lost last picture as they cleared away the detritus? Maybe a refund on their last loan on the house? A soon-to-expire threat to issue a warrant over a parking ticket? It is nice to at least fantasize that I have brought something else nice into their lives than just a new mortgage.

Thank you for that brilliant suggestion!!! I have had people say, "Can't we just sign THE piece of paper on the hood of the car?" (No, we have about 100 pages . . . )
