does anyone use Hughes net satelite for

internet service? How fast is it for downloading docs. I am thinking of moving to a place in the country, and this will be my only option as far as high speed internet service. Any feed back is greatly appreciated.

I live in the country also and unless you have a complete open sky the reception will not be good. They wanted us to cut some trees down. Also did they tell you that you will have to pay to have it connected up when the guys come out C.O.D. Then of course you pay Hughes Net for their services. It cost us more then it was worth because of the trees out here.

What do you use then?

I don't use it, but another notary around here did for several years (it was his only option as well). He said it worked just as well as his DSL.) It's very expensive to set up (equipment to buy).

You might check and see if there are any high-speed wireless service providers. (I'm also in the boonies and didn't expect to find one here, but I did!) I didn't have to buy any equipment and only pay $50/month.

thanks michelle, I don't have that option either, since I do not get cell phone service there, I will not get wireless internet service. The Hughes net is very expensive, and they don't offer a trial period to see if you are satisified with it.

No, mine is not through a cell service. This is different. It's strictly internet, kooked up through the house. They install an antenna on the roof, point it toward a tower (not a cell tower) and hook it up to a modem.

oops - Hooked up, not "kooked" up.

I just did a search and you have LOTS of providers in Ohio. Check out this site:

You're welcome! I had the choice of two companies. One wanted me to buy equipment upfront ($300). The other provided the antenna and modem as part of their service. (They own it.) Shop around if you have choices.

Re: I have HughesNet

For me, also, it's my only choice - no one services this area. We have slower download speeds when it's very overcast and we may lose our internet during storms. All in all though it does the job for me. You won't appreciate it unless you give dial-up a whirl for a bit - you'll then appreciate HughesNet.

It's not the best - I had DSL through my telephone in CT - there IS a noticeable difference in speed (CT was so much faster) - but tis the price we pay for country living..oh, and by the way, it's sickeningly expensive too - but again, tis the price we pay.

I tried the link you gave me michelle, and was only given the satelite option. Thanks to everyone for your input.

Re: I have HughesNet

I have hughes net too. I am switching to cable. Hughes for what is is , is ok. I am tired of the sluggish downloads and the outtages in rainy weather. What really is making me switch is they have this "fair access policy" which only allows you to download so much then they slow you down diliberatly. I found that out while trying to re load all my drivers and the like after my crash last month.
I feel like , I'm paying for service and I should be able to use it.
Customer service reps are available, but they are not in the us.

If that's your only option, it's ok. when it isn't , you switch.
just MHO and .02.

I have had HughesNet for several years. As long as you have a clear view of the southern sky you should be ok. The biggest thing is to make sure that the professional installer installed the *#&$*#$ thing right. When I lived in Nevada I had the worst time with it CONSTANTLY after moving to Colorado and having in re-installed I found out the problems I was having is the satelite was not installed correctly and properly grounded. Have had no problems since then. The "Fair Access Policy" can be a bit of a problem but only if you download more that 250MB within an hour. Cost wise it is expensive and any time you upgrade they extend the contract. I was able to get on their payment option and paid extra the first 15 months to purchase the equipment. The last time I had to call customer support (which thankfully was 3 years ago) you start off in their call center that's in India somewhere, if you have something serious wrong they will get you through to tech support usually in Florida. I have access to another source for high speed now so as soon as my contract runs out I will probably switch just because of the cost.
