Alabama Notaries - Marriages
Received a phone call today from someone I'll call "Nancy". About one week ago she asked me to notarize her application for a marriage license. I didn't hear back from her until today. "Nancy" sounds sane, lucid and even intelligent so when she tells me that her fiancee in Montgomery told her that "her notary" (meaning me) in Huntsville could marry the two of them AND that she confirmed that he was right by calling the SOS office for Alabama- I tried hard not to laugh out loud. I explained to her that she was mistaken and that I could not legally perform her wedding. She insisted that she heard it from the SOS office. I told her that perhaps the SOS had recently changed the Code of Alabama to allow for this and that I'd be happy to do some research on it. I know I won't get a call back from SOS until tomorrow (if even then) so I thought I come to the board to see if any other Alabama notaries have heard of this. I'm well aware that notaries in Florida, Maine and South Carolina can marry folk but I've not heard anything about Alabama. Thanks.

Michelle, I am in Alabama, never heard notaries could do weddings. I am always checking the state laws and have never seen that.
