DocuPen?

Does anyone use the DocuPen scanner for making copies while @ a borrowers home? I saw a clip on HGTV last night while they were talking about innovative products and this looks great (if it works) I read some reviews and it seems to. Before I spend a couple hundred $$ I would like to know if anyone is familiar with it?

Would this be it??? http://www.planon.com/ Neat gizmo, but seems pricey when a cheap digital camera will do the same thing:-)

Yes that's it. I have 2 good cameras but when I do RM apps sometimes I need a copy of thier homeowners ins. and other documents which they didn't get. Since this is not a closing but the application process if they don't have it I need to go find a business where I can make a copy and a lot of the time I am in the middle of nowhere.

Possible solution

Have them call their Ins. Agent & tell them to fax the HO Ins. Declaration page to you.

Re: Possible solution

Another solution is the HP F380. Its a copy/ scan. You do not have to have it plugged into a computer to make it work. Plug in the wall, scan, and print. Its really light weight also. I use it for passports when needed. I got mine from ebay for 35.00.

well to do this. When you call to confirm appointment just remind them you will need the following documents, etc., etc., etc., this should allow them time to make copies. When I have done these myself, the hiring entity always states they will send the originals back to them if the borrower sends you with the originals....

I keep a portable copier in a small rollalong suitecase

in my trunk. Just make sure you keep a two prong adapter with you as some of the older homes cant accomadate (sp?) the newer cords.

Do you take it in and out or leave it in your trunck ? Looks like the heat in the summer would do some damage.

Unfortunately when I do the app for the RM co. it is my responsibility to make sure the copies are sent back with the package. Sometimes the senior citizens can't get a copy (either they don't drive, forgot to get it done (even when I call to remind them), or have no family members that can do it for them. I appreciate everyone's suggestions. Thanks.

Is this the R&M company that pays you a bonus for

Getting the documents signed and all copies collected. As long as you have time, you can still take digital picture of the documents and download and print at the office. Neat pen scanner though:-)

In Japan they have truly portable fax and scanners, why

hasn't the technology shown up in the US? In Japan they are very small and recharged much like our cell phones...... They have had thes mini's for decades...

I, like you, am intrigued with these devices and have also looked at the Visioneer Strobe XP 300 (http://orders.visioneer.com/category.jsp?category=MOBILE ) . So far, my digital camera has worked fine for HO insurance policies, etc. However, I am also interested in the business receipt copies and organizing a paperless office. The advantages of a DocuPen seem to be that the device can copy from bound books. The Visioneer however seems to offer editable text functions and more software options. I keep on waiting to talk to someone who has actually used one of these devices.

I have the Visioneer Strobe XP 100

It is powered through a USB connection to my laptop and works great to obtain copies of HO insurance and even DLs. It does not work with a passport since it is too thick to pass through the scanner.

Waste of $$$$$$$$$$

For as long as I've been on this forum, this is one of the odd things. I noticed people would not consider a little extra investment on a printer which is the biggest part of this business, but rather would spent so much for something not necessary needed.

Re: Waste of $$$$$$$$$$

I purchased this scanner more than 2 years ago, before I decided to go fully mobile with a power inverter and printer in the car. It was worth it to me at the time and I still use it to capture copies of borrower's IDs since the printer I usually carry with me is a printer only instead of an AIO. At this point I am contemplating an upgrade to my mobile office equipment and may purchase an AIO but haven't made my final decision.

I like the idea that I do not need to have my laptop with me to scan the documents. Also I have several laser printers, a couple of them are small enough to take with me but still a pain. When I tried to use my digital camera the documents were hard to read because of the original size and trying to fit it all in one picture. I just thought this gadget is neat if it works.

Re: I have the Visioneer Strobe XP 100

Thank you! I guess a digital camera will still work for passports as it works with DL. How do you like the Visioneer software? Is the OCR program good? Do you use it for your business to organize tax records? The software sounds great, but I always wondered how well it works.

Asside, I like you have 3 printers, but do not like lugging them around if I can avoid it. I already use a rolling softsided brief bag for all my other notary gear. I visit a lot of homes and farms where concrete sidewalks and paths are non-existent and pulling one rolling bag through gravel is a real chore. I would not want to deal with two!

Re: I have the Visioneer Strobe XP 100

I don't really use the OCR software that came with the device. The software allows you to save the scanned images in different formats. I do scan all my receipts and all checks I receive so I have record of all income and expenses. It has come in handy when I have been short-paid for an assignment because I can email a copy of the confirmation and a copy of the check received to the hiring party as proof.

The scanner weighs less than one pound and is shaped like a 3-hole punch so it doesn't take up much room in my briefcase. I have a rolling bag too, and it fits right on top of my laptop.

My fax machine also has the ability to scan (it's a Brother AIO), but I don't have it hooked up to my desktop. I use it to send faxes and make the occasional copy or two. My primary printer is a dual tray HP and I carry a single tray HP in the car to print on the road.

My camera actually has a setting for taking pics of docs. If you've got 2 decent digital cameras, I would check your manual to see if you have a setting for that as well.

I have used my camera to take pics of documents and they've come out really good.
