Important if you have a website
I have logged over 250 hours into studying how to get on the first page of the results of a Google or Yahoo search for a notary in my area. My research has paid off very nicely.
Just last month, Google made a major change to its search strategy (aka algorithm). Yahoo followed suit. Both now give more weight to forums and blogs.
Bottom line practical tip for you: List your website address on every message you post on every forum - even if it isn't relevant to the forum topic.
List your url on every notary board post. List it on non-notary forums. I have started listing my url on my messages in the pug dog lover's forums in which I participate.
Don't worry about your url being irrelevant. People don't usually read urls below signatures. But Google and Yahoo read them. That is all that matters. Good luck! Laura
PS: If you don't have a website, get one. One page with all the info you list on your notary directory profiles will be sufficient. The website need not be pretty - it just needs to contain relevant text. Search this forum for free/cheap website resources.

you saw that last line a mile away, didn't you?

If you don't have a website in 2007 you are truly considered a "non business company" and you will not be hired. Notay/loans signers that don't have a website and started when I did in 2002 probably don't need a website because they have a list of clients that hire them; everyone else after 2002 needs a website.
A website probably won't get you hired but the lack of a website will make title/escrow/lender/signing company not hire you because you are considered a person who knows nothing about BUSINESS!
Put a picture up on your website and don't include your kids, religion/politics/your truck/etc
This is the year 2007 and every company in the United States needs to have a website if they are selling anything and we are definitely selling our service.

Further Information...
Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank
Especially look at the Google quote in the section "PageRank uses links as "votes"" and the section "Google's "rel='nofollow'" proposal".
Just some good information - it would seem that posting your notary website on a forum about dogs is not going to influence a notary search as much as posting your website on a notary forum.

Doesn't like Google or Yahoo offer like some sort of free web page, it's nothing major but for something it works right?

I set up mine through register.com. Wasn't much money. Was also able to get an email account too. You can get 1 pag, 5 page, 20 page sites. I found it pretty easy to use.
