No Wedding Bells for Alabama Notaries

Alabama notaries CAN NOT conduct weddings. I got that from the AL SOS office today. This is something that isn't even being considered. I called back the person who wanted to hire me to marry her and her fiance and confirmed my earlier answer to her. I'm still scratching my head about the notary in Guntersville, AL who said she'd be willing to do the marriage for them for $25.

Many Notaries are licensed to perform weddings. You can get ordained online by many different "churches". It has nothing to do with your Notary commission, but a lot of Notaries get ordained.

Hmmm...that's an interesting point you've made. I guess you're saying that the Guntersville notary could also be a licensed minister and therefore can legally perform weddings? Makes sense to me - and this could very well be the situation. However the person I'm dealing with is under the impression that a notary commission authorizes all notaries conduct weddings.

Thanks for your post, rengel. I'll mention this to the caller.

Chk yr state: in CT, no Internet minister weddings

In CT, Internet minister weddings are not valid. One might make it through the system, but the wedding, if challenged, would not be valid. There are fines involved for impersonating an officiant.

It is my understanding that a "minister" in CT has to be actively in the ministry/or retired from past activity- not signing up for ordination in five minutes online. For example: that minister would have a "flock," a meeting place for regular "worship."

PA lurkers

I often wonder how many lurkers are on these boards 'learning' and soaking up all the 'wisdom' they read here, taking it as the gospel and the way things are done - although state specific is one of the most important things to keep in mind.

PA notaries, do not run out and get ordained on line so you can perform marriages - I've seen in PA people's profiles that they list they can do marriages (perhaps they are 'real' ministers, I certainly don't know). Marriages performed by people ordained over the internet are under scrutiny here and I don't believe a final determination has been made as to whether or not they are legal. Check with your local Orphans' Court prior to expending the effort - I believe they all have a flyer discussing the current controversy.

But then again...

I do believe that Florida NP's can perform weddings. The person might think that AL NP's can just because FL can.

It is a great opportunity to educate someone about the duties of an AL NP.

Re: But then again...

Yes, Florida, South Carolina, Maine and one parish in Louisiana authorize notaries to perform marriage ceremonies.
