Notarizing a signed document - in CA

I haven't notarized in a while, so im rusty. Can someone please help?

I've been asked to notarize a sign document from 2003. This person got two witness to verify she was the signer and also had the document signed. She now wants it to be notarized. Can I notarized something already signed? Please advice. Thank you.

Safest way: Have person sign it again and notarize as of date person appeared before you & signed it (the 2nd time).

if it is an acknowledgment, then it is fine to notarize. She is just acknowledging to you that she is the one who signed the document.
If it is a jurat, then she must sign the document in front of you, so have her sign it again in your presence.

So the client signed the document 4 years ago in front of 2 witnesses. Brenda's answer is correct. Resigning it is unnecessary unless the statement of particulars requires that you give the signer an oath or affirmation. The document can be acknowledged with proper ID and a signature in your journal. Obviously the signature in your journal should match the one on the document.

Oops sorry Sylvia it's a little early for me in Socal. I have to wake my kid up to start getting ready for school at 5:30. Last night I had a midnight notary assignment that lasted till 2pm this morning. A cup of coffee should help.
