UPS bit me
I just got UPS statement today. I have been charged for an early morning delivery. It is due to a title company going out of business and it appears it is being charged back to me. I used the UPS site to fill out the shipping label and unfortunately as some know you have to tie it to your account. Since they are out of business and don't have a valid account guess who it came back to. Not only am I not getting paid by National Notary, now I have to pay for the stinking shipping of the package from a closing that occured last feb.
This teaches me not to use the website and to go back to filling the forms out by hand.
Suggestions on how to get out of this??? Unfortunately I can't call sutomer service until monday to talk to UPS.

UPS didn't bite you, National Notary bit you.
What would you have UPS do? Should they write it off or should they bill the other "partner" in the transaction? There is a message from a week or so ago where a notary said that they were going to regroup and that she would gladly work with them. The reason she stated was that "Brian" got left holding the bag when his partners folded. It sounds to me that you and Brian were left holding the bag, mostly you.

National notary is kaput, who else is there on the billing?
There is a sender, a receiver and a bill to entity. The way I and UPS seems to look at it is that you sent a package to someone and told UPS to bill someone else. That someone else did not pay so they can only go against the person that sent the package and said to not bill me, but bill these folks. I agree you got the short end, but not by UPS, but ny National Notary.

Just means I go back to hand writing the forms and removing my name as sender and quit sending the confirmation by UPS website to the title company and to the signing company if there was one.
P.S. wasnt national notary that went out of business was title company in IL.

I tell all my students
When you fill out a FedEx or UPS bill never put your name on the bill.
The sender is the same name and information, as the receiver and its the title/escrow/lender company you are returning the loan documents to.
I fill out the air bills by hand and I have never been charged in 5 years. I know it is more convenient and faster to use the FedEx, etc but eventually you will be charged.
Don't use the borrowers name as the sender as it will get charged to them if a company goes bankrupt and then it comes back to you, the notary and you will be charged.

Don't even order labels--pick 'em up somewhere
I do what you've told your students, Joan, and was STILL billed for one shipment! Because I used labels I'd ordered from UPS--they apparently keep track of the #s--the bill appeared on my credit card. Was a glitch all the way around as the co's account # was correct, very legible--yet I got billed--and, of course, must pay . I did collect from co., but it took months & much faxing of documentation to do so.

Wow, Lee...that's incredible...but makes sense.
I used to do it all online but since things have gotten so hinky, I now pick up FEDEX / UPS airbills and use those.
Never have been bit, but like the other day I did a job for a title co who I might have gotten a hit on because the address I was sending out to was a different address than the earlier address I used. Didn't know if they had one account for all and didn't want to find out. It was a weekend when I returned it and my contact wasn't in the office. I just put sender same as the receiver and put their phone numbers all over it.
It got delivered.
As an aside, one thing I started doing a long time ago when I was in the online book sales business was to use the confirmation number as my invoice number...same with fedex and ups...tracking number is my invoice number. Tt doesn't make for chronological order when you sort by invoice number but it keeps from having duplicate invoice numbers in either the receiver or the sender's accounting system.

Re: Don't even order labels--pick 'em up somewhere
And don't be surprised folks, if your local UPS (or independent) store doesn't have forms available....they also know the forms are "coded" to them and don't want to end up being billed for your "drop off". Go to the drop boxes for your supplies.
Also..of course it's just speculation on my part, but the time may come when your packages with no "shipper of record" will end up sitting somewhere rather than being delivered. I know and YOU know it's just a self addressed, stamped envelope...but UPS/Fedex/DHL may surmise it is a terrorist ploy.

Re: Don't even order labels--pick 'em up somewhere
With UPS, this whole thing sounds like a catch-22... The drop boxes are poorly stocked with supplies and the so-called UPS stores are extremely unhelpful. I've been thinking about opening an account with UPS just to get supplies. (I've had one with FedEx for a long time with no problems, but I hope it's not just that I've been lucky!) I also seem to have more clients using UPS lately to save a few $$. I guess it's either spend my time trying to raid every UPS drop box I see or give up and open an account. BTW, I agree with all those who say DHL is even worse!

I try to fill in all blanks of the form as carefully....
as I can, but try as I may, the only part of the sender section that is readable is "Bob, my cell phone #, borrower last name (in reference Section) TC reference #, my city , state and ZIP" For some reason , you can not quite make out my last name or address. DHL (Delivery Happens Late) is famous for back billing to sender, no matter what info you give them.

I was once told by UPS that if the account # you are using as the billing # was invalid, the UPS system would not accept the transaction if done online.
I think that you should call customer service and make plenty of noise. Writing a detailed letter would be the next step should the person on the phone not want to help you. If the UPS system accepts the number as valid, then UPS should be responsible for seeing that you don't get billed for it should the TC go out of business. This is a concern for us all. Keep us informed.
