Advise from techies please!
Just received an ad from a company that protects your computor from things that go bump in the night.I don't want to mention names but it seems to have a scottish name. They have come out with a new product to keep you from leaving tracks if you surf the internet. Anyone else get this and do you think it is worth the money? Also will it interfer with the way we get docs and such. I am totally clueless about anything of that nature and depend upon the kindness of others. Thanks a big bunch for your opinions!

I guess the first question should be whether you have a reason for hiding your Internet surfing tracks?
What you need is anti-virus protection, spyware protection, and a decent firewall. All of these can be had for free - no need to spend money. I can provide names and URLs for these if you need them. Companies like that Scottish sounding one make money by scaring people into buying their products - don't buy into their hype.

Antivirus, spyware and firewall protect you from intruders. There are a variety of softwares out there that you mention. To name a few, you have CCcleaner, Spybot SD, WindowWasher, Advance Window Care, etc. They will remove traces (cookies) of sites you surfed from your computer.

I am not familiar with any track-erasing software, but when it comes to the anti-virus and anti-spyware software from the Scottish-sounding company, and their customer service, I've heard a few things, and I've decided to pay for Zone Alarm Securtity Suite rather than use the Scottish-sounding software that my ISP provides for free.

Ilona, it is also to my understanding that if you turn your computer completely off for the evening, the intruders cannot get in.

You don't even have to turn your computer off, just disconnect from the network (internet) by unplugging your modem or turning the modem off.
