Assaulted Notaries?
Reading the Outside the home thread I came across an interesting theory about why, perhaps, the request is to do the closing in a neutral place......to prevent liability in case the notary is assaulted. I have never feared going into someone's home because my thinking is that this person/these people have gone through much to get this loan and I represent the last cog in the wheel. Wouldn't I be an expensive kill or assault? Lots of people know exactly where I am, it's not like I'm knocking on doors selling magazines.
So my question is this: Am I being naive? Has anyone heard a story of a notary meeting harm in a signer's home? Other than, of course, having cookies thrown at them by unruly children (like what occurred at a signing I did several weeks ago)?

lol I've been caught between divorcing couples SCREAMING at each other a few times. I prefer when they ask to meet in a neutral setting b/c they behave better! One time I did have to leave a house because Mr. BO was throwing things. (and screaming) The LO called to see if I was okay and said she'd make sure they sent a male notary when he calmed down. (Good, cause I wasn't going back!)

"Assault of the Palmetto Bugs" is a frequent occurance...
in some neighborhoods. FYI: Palmetto Bug = fancy Florida word for big-ass cockroaches that fly

Yep, and move furniture too. Just put one under each leg and get the whip. (That's each leg of the couch or chair. Get focused here. )

Okay, that was funny, Paul...in a really yucky kind of way that will make your skin crawl if you spend ANY time at all thinking about it. Moving on now!!!!!!

Re: attacked
I had a lady throw the doc's at me and told me to get the He!! out of her house. There wasn't one thing right about the loan and she tried to take it out on me. I tried so hard to explain how this works and she wouldn't let me explain. I was very calm with her, packed my stuff up and went to the door. She left the room. I couldn't get out of the house. She had 4 deadbolts and 2 of them had to have keys. I made a huge mistake of mentioning to her if she ever had a fire she would never get out. Never should have said that. She got a real mean look on her face and I didn't say another word. This was a very nice neighborhood with beautiful homes. She was paranoid about someone, something. Reason she was doing a re-fi was to pay for all the jewerly she had charged on her credit card. That's the only time I have ever felt uncomfortable.

On a serious note
I remember reading a tale from (I think) Kay/NV on another board about two -three years ago. She went through a horrible ordeal on a closing and since reading that post, I've always carried pepper spray with me.
Anything can happen out there, be prepared.

I always try to be aware and ready, but so far nothing terrible. I did have a bi-polar lady who screamed at the top of her lungs at the LO, but was ok to me. Also a homeless crazy guy screamimg and cussing at me during an out of the car signing (don't cha love those?) To me the worst thing I've had to deal with is cockroachs.. ewwwwww

Ick - don't even mention the roaches!
I've never had any problems with any borrowers themselves, but some of the homes! There have been some where I hated to set my bag down because the roaches would be sure to climb in and try to come home with me! Shudder.

Re: Ick - don't even mention the roaches!
I have been real lucky. No problems in 1000's of signings. But one of my best friends was at a signing and Mr. Borrower told her, "Lady, if you tell me one more time that I have a 3 day right to cancel, I am gonna punch you in the face!" She got the **** out of there!

I've never had a REAL bad experience, but there was one borrower (a single man) who made me very uncomfortable. He kept scooting too close to me and asked a lot of personal questions. I made it through the signing and got out of there quick. I carried pepper spray on my keychain after that.

Aside from being invited out for a drink sometime or dogs licking my ankles to death, or kids wanting to dance on the table, I have not had scary experiences. I do carry pepper spray and whenever I have a signing with a single, my Hubby will usually come along to explore while I sign. The borrower sees him pull away and I good with that.
