Cell phone off
I got a possible funding delay on my hand and the notary is no where to be found. 15 calls to 3 different listed numbers and 2 urgent emails in the past 4 hours and still no respond.

Wow, how do Notaries keep in business that way? Even when I'm out of state, I answer my phone. No matter where I am I keep my phone nearby. Only at a Dr's office (or something similar) do I ignore it and right out the door I'm checking it!

Maybe Notary had an accident or is hospitalized. Hope not.
But after 4 hours... mid-afternoon. There's probably a good emergency-type reason.

There are some legitimate reasons for an unanswered cell
I'd propped mine up in the bathroom while getting ready to leave for a closing and then walked out the door without it. By the time I realized it wasn't in the car, I'd already driven the half-hour to the closing. The borrowers were really nice and let me use their phone to call the title company I was working with so I could check to be sure there were no last-minute issues or instructions and then to let them know the closing was finished. So even though you think that cell phone is practically welded to you as another body part, it is still possible to unintentionally leave it at home. Other legitimate reasons: Battery dies unexpectedly while at a closing, and notary doesn't realize it until afterward when attempting to check messages. Notary is at a closing is in a rural area where cell phone service is non-existent, at least from his/her carrier. Notary is at a funeral, wedding or other event where cell phones should be turned off. Notary has had an emergency and has not yet had time to call the agency. Although I must admit that when I suffered a dislocated ankle while entering the restaurant where the borrowers and loan officers were waiting for me to conduct a closing, I not only called the signing agency but also called other notaries in my area to try and find someone who could come over and take over the closing while the ambulance took me to the hospital.

I don't understand the original statement - what does a 'funding delay' have to do with the notary?
1. Are you saying notary didn't drop docs and you want to know why? If so, the notary is just wrong not getting back to you.
2. Are you saying a loan closed and there are now further 'issues' to be dealt with after the fact? If so, perhaps you are being ignored on purpose because this was a messed order the notary now wants nothing further to do with (been there, done that, although I always tell them so, don't just ignore someone)
3. Has the notary not shown up at the appt? after 4 hours, you should clearly have found someone else.
But, perhaps I just don't understand what you're saying.

I can relate to the no service in a remote area while driving. I have missed calls because of this, but what can you do. I do call when I finally get the message beep, but more than likely its a goner. Did your notary ever end up calling you? Like to hear the reasoning behind not getting back to you in a timely manner. You know, curiousity killed the cat.

I live in a very rural area and there are many, many miles with no service (no matter which provider you are with). If the notary is out doing other signings today (gasp) perhaps he/she is in a rural area.

2 weeks ago, I was in the hospital for 3 days. During that time, I received 5 calls for signings. Each time I answered the call, I referred the client to my Notary Partner thay way no one was without service.
It is important to answer the phone whenever possible.

The notary forgot to put the county in the venue of the deed and recording/funding is pending. I did get a call back at 6:30PM after notary got home from work. He was too busy to check phone/voicemail.
NOW, my client just call. They received a fax with a note of apology and a blank page with the notary's stamp.
