E-mail link in profile

I just updated my profile and noticed that the link to my e-mail says "please try again during normal business hours" Clicked on some other profiles and it says the same???

Just looked at your profile and it shows your email address. The "properties" display as "mailto:[e-mail address]" and clicking on it brings up my mail program, addressed to you.

Sounds like you may have a hijacker in your system that is taking over the "mailto" linking to your email program. Look at some website that has links to email. (You can look at mine and click on the "webmaster" link.)

After a certain hour in the day (I believe it is 5:00 PM) our email addresses read "please try again during normal business hours". Why? I haven't a clue.

Right now we can view email addresses. Check back after 5 PM and you won't be able to.

Huh? When did that start? I don't remember ever seeing that message, no matter what time of day or night it was.

It's something I've noticed around the same time frame everyday. However I am wrong because each profile now reads, "please check back during normal business hours". M-F is when I noticed the 5 o'clock "incident".

Dittos Here!

If I'm logged in I can see my e-mail address when viewing my profile, but if I'm NOT logged in it shows "Please try back during normal business hours".

Re: Dittos Here! And me too!

So it's not XP nor IE7 as I am now getting the same error message (once I changed to a different IP address to allow me to view profiles). Apparently, it is something that Harry has configured into the page and only he can fix. So, I'm not going to worry about it any more. I'll modify my profile to show the email address for those who can view my profile but see the "... try later ..." message.

Getting weirder and weirder ...

I used a different computer and when I click to view a profile, I get a message that says "You have exceeded the maximum number of daily profiles you are allowed to view without logging in". Funny thing is, this is the FIRST profile I tried to look at.

Thanks, Korey.

Now, of course, there has to be a common reason (not necessarily a logical one) as to why some users will see it and others don't.

For example, what OS and browser is everyone using that sees the problem?

What OS and browser is everyone using that doesn't see the problem.
- I don't see it using Widnows 2000 SP4 and Firefox 2 nor with IE 6.

I'm not having any problems. But Larry and Korey are. It appears that the page may be built (logic within the page design) specifically for XP/IE7 to show that statement.

Been seeing this awhile. Just a guess but...

I'll betcha that Harry is trying to cut back on the creeps who have gone to profile after profile sucking off our emails so they could market to us. NR has been used and abused by a certain signing service related coffee shop and cafeteria...so I have been told by two of the major users of the cafeteria offerings. It's just so wrong--I have lost a lot of respect for the participants in that endeavor based on what I have heard from insiders.

Remember "Nancy Notary?" Well, I think this is an attempt to put a stop to databases like hers and the cafeteria from capitalizing on what NR's owners have been able to create.

Am I talking in code? Kinda...I just don't have the time or the inclination to smooth the ruffled feathers of those I am talking about or to listen to their justifications. Either you know what I mean, or you don't.

Re: Been seeing this awhile. Just a guess but...

One more thing...the PM feature came on right before this started. We can talk to each other that way or through the forum...but NR detractors cannot snatch our emails.

Good for you, Harry. Protect your real estate.

Re: Been seeing this awhile. Just a guess but...

I disagree that it is for the better. Granted, it is protecting our information from being stolen, but it is also inhibiting justifiable searches from being completed. I can't tell you how many times I'm told "I found your name on Notary Rotary", but I can tell you that hiding an email address from legitimate organizations to protect it from a sleazy few is just a bit over the top, in my book. Having information lifted is an expected hazard.

I think a better way to do would be to hide the address context. In other words, the email address itself would appear only as link (such as "Send email to agent"Wink or display as a graphics image. We are looking into that option for the redesigned website that I'm working on right now.

Re: Been seeing this awhile. Just a guess but...

It has nothing to do with OS or browser - this is server-side smoke and mirrors. The profile page is being created dynamically when you select a profile to view; if you look at the page source, you'll see that the message is actually hardcoded there. When you don't see that message, you'll find the email address hardcoded in the HTML, along with a mailto link. There are other differences between the two HTML versions, so there are at least two scripts that create the page; there's logic somewhere on their side that is determining which version to use.

Re: Been seeing this awhile. Just a guess but...

I knew the page was being created dynamically. That's why I thought the trigger may be the OS or browser level since that is easy to check and then create a page based on the result. Obviously, it is not based on either. Not sure how Harry has it programmed since we truly cannot see the actual source but the generated resulting source.

Re: Been seeing this awhile. Just a guess but...

I used to do some of this type of programming for a living in another life... I obviously don't know all the details in this case, but I have a pretty good idea of what they're doing and how.

It's actually a good way to stop email address harvesting, depending on how detailed their logs are.

When I clicked on your profile link, it says " Please check back during regular business hours". When I logged in, it just gives your e-mail address. My thoughts is that Harry is protecting us against spammers. I have a lot of spam that pretend to be financial businesses in my business e-mail account. If a lender, title company truly needs to get in touch with us, they can dial the phone numbers listed. I personally like the fact that the e-mails are being covered. If only members can have access, there is less likely chance we will get spam. I personally would never SPAM my notrot friends!
