Fax backs

What do most people charge for fax backs? Is $20.00 to high?

I for one do not charge for this. Stack'em up, dial number , push go. Takes a maximum of 10 minutes, I can't bring myself to charge for this. I have seen where simply suggesting you charge gets you out of this requirement. I would hate to think that I lost a clients business because I demanded payment for such a simple task.

I don't charge for faxbacks either, but I have often wondered why I don't! I worked for one company that wanted about 20 pages faxed back to them, and then an additional 30+ pages faxed back to the title co. for the lender.
I think if it's just the HUD, signed pgs of Mtg., maybe no charge for 10 or less pages, but when you are faxing back 20+ pages, I think a faxback charge is justified.
I'm interested what others have to say.

Same here I dont charge either. I use my own home office fax and it cost me around 10 cents per faxed call.

While faxing is not a difficult job, it can be time consuming. Since I live in "the boonies", the nearest drop boxes or shipping centers are atleast 25 minutes away. So for me, faxing back means an extra trip to drop the docs. Almost another hour of my time, not to mention the time it takes to seperate docs and wait for the fax to go through. It is much easier to be able to drop the docs as soon as the signing is over. Some companies do compensate for fax backs. The TC I work for the most pays me 15.00 extra every time they request I fax back docs. Now having said all of that, just to clarify, I am not talking about faxing an invoice or status update. I am only refering to the docs that you have to ship back. Hope everyone's week has started off great!

Here's my take on it.

Some notaries won't fax back anything period...for any price.

Others it's only the HUD.

As indicated in other posts...some will fax anything the lender wants for zip.

I'm kind of a compromise:

I'll fax 15 pages free of charge. Anything over that is a flat $25 fee if it's one page or a

hundred.

For example..if they want 20 pages faxed...I'll fax 15 and put in a note saying anything over

that is a flat $25 fee. I've never had anyone buck me on that.

If the request is reasonable and under 10 pages, no additional fee.
Over 10 pages is excessive and I do charge $15.

I too must make a trip back to the office to fax and then another trip to drop off package if they want it shipped the same day. Some requests are silly. I tell them that if I have to go back to the office to fax back the docs will not ship today, often fax back is waived by them.

To request entire 15 pages of Deed, all notarized pages and 10-15 other pages is crazy. They'll be getting the docs the next morning 99% of the time.

One thing you can do when you know it's only a few pages. Make copies and have them signed, drop your package and go home and fax. No extra trip required.

Having said that I do charge for fax backs, but only if its over 10 pages.

Keep in mind some of the SS you work for are getting extra $$ for you faxing in the funding docs. That fee should be passed on to the one who does the work.

The real problem for me with faxbacks is...

not the time or paper, phone bill etc, but the fact that you have to come back home and fax the actual doc that your sending Beverly, so in that case for me it is another trip for to the drop box and that is half an hour both ways. So if you dont "charge" for faxbacks, good! but come on included in your fee anyways. Some cheap SS
offer you 65.00 dollars for signing; faxing included. I dont do that sorry!

I guess that the question of charging for Fax backs comes down to your personal circumstances. If you have to travel a ways (or even just a few miles), it might be in your best interest to charge for this service. Personally, I happen to have a FedEx/Kinkos essentially across the street, so it's not a large inconvenience to find a dropbox, at least for FedEx. I think they also have a UPS dropbox in front, which seemed odd to me.

Re: Fax backs...afterthought

On the other hand, I guess it doesn't matter what I charge, until my phone rings with my first signing...

Thanks! In the meantime, I just keep studying everything I can get my hands on, keep reading this board, register with as many sites as I can and of course, try not to ask any 'newbie' questions.

For me, it is not about the phone charges. It is all about the extra time and inconvenience. On Saturday, for example, it was fax back or get the docs shipped on time. No brainer, at least for me.

Some people have wanted 50+ pages faxed back. (No, I'm not kidding!)

IMHO, the idea of saying 5 (to 10?) pages for free and then $25 (or $10 or ...) has definite merit!

One thing that I've found people appreciate is a colored page that says "The faxed back pages preceed this sheet." inserted between the faxed back pages and the rest of the docs. I will NOT make ANY ATTEMPT to put the faxed back pages back in order with the rest of the docs.

I have gone one step further, in that I now am running windows vista on my office computer, and it does not recognize my fax machine, so no more faxbacks of any kind. I inform all clients of this, and miraculously, they don't mind one bit!

I haven't faxed back loan documents to a signing service for review in 5 years. The only faxing I do is in conjunction with a purchase. Are you charging the Signing Service an extra $20? for example: $50 + $20 = $70?

Duplicates--

I just make duplicates of the faxed backed items. I pull them out of the package and run thme through the Brother 8220. I selected letter or legal. I put them right on top. I tell the client, the title company requires fax backs so we are going to sign out of order but I will explain as we go along. I drop one set in the Fedex on the way home, the extras I fax and shred.

Never had a complaint. Saved countless hours by avoiding extra trips to Fedex.

Of course this means you actually have to read the instructions before the signing.

Re: Duplicates--

This works well if only the HUD and/or RTC needs faxed back. But when they say entire 15 pages of mortgage, TIL, HUD, RTC, IAF, all notarized pages ... Well it gets crazy.

It also has really nothing to do with experience, some TC or SA just always request this so they can get a start on their paperwork. I say don't waste my time and you'll have them in the morning.
