OT~For those who love Janis Joplin....

check out this video link on YouTube. P!NK performs "Me and Bobby McGee" flawlessly. She brought back wonderful memories of Janis.

Boy I could tell you a story or two about Janis! Hilarious! I met her in the most bizarre way in the town of Larkspur where she had bought a house. I was a teen in the SF Bay area in the 60's. I have her picture on my refrigerator. But I must get off to an early signing

Re: OT~For those who love Janis Joplin....good Texas

girl from the Beaumont/Port Arthur, Texas area.

Merely having lived there must have been a step up on her untimely demise.

Zana...I knew that name said a lot about your life...so you knew Janis?? Wow.

Wow, it did bring back memories. I was in a rock band at 18, sang and played flute. I went to one of her concerts. She had told me I could sit on the side of the stage but security made me move, but when they started making me move away, she stopped singing and told me that I could stay right where I was. I was so amazed and star struck

What an awesome story, Margaret!
My dad was in love with her... he didn't 'love' her... he always clarified that he was IN love with her. Some personal story he took to his grave. All he would tell us is that she was the only woman he was ever "in" love with, as he gazed at the 'Pearl' album cover.
What a voice! I wish I had seen her live... she amazes me 35 years later. And I think P!nk did her vocal performance of Bobby McGee justice :o)

Good...but no Janis (sorry all you Pink lovers)...I never

saw Janis in person, but saw her a lot on TV (like The Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack et al)and Janis just seemed to sing it 'grittier' (if you know what I mean).

IMHO, Pink's version is like a young girl who is singing a song and doing a very good job of it BUT Janis' version, well you felt like she LIVED the song...that it was...in a way autobiographical. I felt like Janis put her heart and soul into that song, giving you some insight into her life, whereas Pink just sang a song. (I hope I'm making sense in my comparisons). Again, just my opinion (I'm OLD and therefore entitled to my opinion) :-)

Janis Story

My freind's sister had just gotten her first apt and was having a party. It was located above the old Larkspur movie theater. You entered from the back and the first room was the kitchen. You then proceeded down the long hall lined with bedrooms and the living room was above the marquee. We stopped off in her sisters room to check it out. We had our heads in the closet trying to figure out why there was a sink in there...big conversation going on. All of a sudden we hear "Whatcha doin girls?" And there she was with Kris Kristopherson ( he was very drunk). She explained to us that the sink was in there because most likely the apt had been a brothel at one time. Apparently she and Kris saw folks coming into the party and decided to join us for awhile. Once she was there it got really crowded and we had a curfew. I think I was 14. Had to be home for supper!
Back then there were a lot of spontaneous free concerts and I got to see her perform "open air" a lot, sometimes with a mix of musicians from other bands. The first time I saw her was in the old Avalon Ballroom when she was first getting airtime on the area stations. The only way I could go was if I went with my brother. He prompltly ditched me at the front door. Incredibly intimidated by the Hells Angels acting as security. I sat in the balcony next to the puppet show and watched her from there. THAT night is when I became a fan.

I miss those concerts. . .

. . .when it was about the singer and the music and no flash or glam or choreography or pyrotechnics or dancers of either gender showing lots of skin. . .

Well, OK, I can live with male dancers showing lots of skin. . .

Marlene, definitely NOT speaking for USNA!

Loved your story, Stamper!

Re: I miss those concerts. . .

Well Janis was pretty flashy! But I know what you are talking about. Wonder how the Justins , Britney's and Christinas would play in the park on a Sunday afternoon?

Right on, Stamper, can you picture a benefit? Hey, now -

Flashbacks of the Avalon and the Filmore; the Haight; the Park - all day today.

Psychedelica.

Peace.
