Receipt for notarial service?
I just read that if a customer asks for a receipt, we must honor the request. Has anyone ever been asked to provide a receipt?
If this is true, then I should get myself a receipt booklet. The carbonized generic receipts sold in office supply stores should suffice, I would think.
Thanks, Ever

If you are providing notary services to the public, then yes, I would get a receipt book and it would be a good way of keeping track of your accounting for them because there are no invoices. However, when doing a loan signing, I would only provide a receipt to the payor of my services.

Receipt book...
I always give a receipt for my general notary services. The NNA has notary receipt books which are nice because it breaks it down to notary fees, travel/service fee, other, etc.
HOWEVER.... I'm letting my NNA membership expire the end of April - it would be nice if Harry could sell these on this site!!!

This could be a Notary test question
However I doubt it because it is not LOAN SIGNER related. Be forwarned if you are offering public notary service you are required to give a reciept for your fees to the signer. Refer to Government code 6109 of your California notary Handbook. I have used XYZ's books since 1998. Harry step up and give us one.

Nope, not a test question....
Man, I haven't been giving out receipts. I was never told (even in the class I took) that it was required. And apparently, I missed it in the handbook.

Re: Nope, not a test question....
Just read the code and I'm relieved... It is indeed required only when the payor requests it. And so far, no one has done so. So, I'm cool. But gotta go stock up on receipts.

If you had to you could just write up a recipt. Preprinted are nicer, butI don't think they are required. That said, if Harry sold them, I'd buy them!

I give receipts for all notary services I perform for the general public. I use the ones that Barbara recommended because they're specifically designed for notary services. The customer doesn't have to ask for it. I feel they're entitled to it. Each of us have a record of the transaction. It's just as important as keeping a notary journal.
Good luck.

Whenever I perform general notary work, I offer to send them a receipt in the mail. Some take me up on my offer, others don't. I have a standard receipt form on my computer that I made which I fill out and send. It also breaks down the fee into travel and notary services.

THANKS, EVERYONE!
I went ahead and bought a booklet from Office Depot this morning. Not sure yet if I will mail a receipt to past customers, along with my new set of business cards. Might be a good idea.

Re: THANKS, EVERYONE!
Ever, I did the same thing a few years back. I keep it in my bag with my other notary stuff so I have it at hand whenever I do general notary work. It's probably more designed for use for someone paying their rent or something similar, I think, but I just write on it "notary services" with the # of signatures "@$10/sig" and amount of travel fees (usually all on the same line) and people seem perfectly happy with it. They have something with my signature that shows what they paid and that they don't owe me anything else, and I have the carbon copy. BTW, I do enter it separately as income earned into my computer records so I don't have to use the carbons for my taxes and other record keeping. (But they're there if I ever need them...)
