What do you mean by "24-hour service?"
Do you mean you're available 24-hours a day to work (23 of which, of course, will be waiting for documents to post or arrive by e-mail ), or that you can do closings that are scheduled within a 24-hour period (that is, you don't need a day's advance warning to take a job)?

Here in Vegas...24-hour service means just that!...we are a 24 hour a day town and therefore I make myself available to sign documents at THEIR convenience. The latest I have actually 'started' a signing was 11pm, but the latest 'usually' I go out is 9pm. The ss and tc STILL do not 'get' Vegas and therefore get me the docs well within time for NORMAL people, but if the borrower is a dealer who gets off at 11pm and wants to meet for the signing, I'm available.
Hope that helps.

Thanks, yes, that's helpful. I can't imagine being lucid enough to close anything at 3 in the morning, but maybe you "do" lots of caffeine. Since this IS my part-time job (y'all think THIS is slow, you should try farming!), I'd hate to put myself out there as being available 24/7. I don't mind the 7, it's the 24 part! Thanks for the explanation.

I can be available anytime by APPOINTMENT, which means I don't take phone calls at 3am, but will meet at that hour if necessary and previously arranged. I have done notarizations at odd hours for people in hotels, etc that have a need and/or work odd hours. Doesn't happen often, but when the occasion arises, they are happy to pay for the convenience.

I too offer 24 hour service, but my rate at 3:00 AM is different then at 3:00 PM. I'll meet with anyone at anytime, but it ain't going to be for peanuts.

24 hour service means that I do not turn off my cell phone. It is unusual for me to go a week without a call for public notary service after 1am. I advertise this service and charge an extra travel fee.
I always get the comment that I am the only Notary that answers the phone.

I could see doing a middle-of-the-night closing if it were scheduled in advance, but bless those of you who can roll out of bed and go out! I'd be a complete zombie, wouldn't recognize the mortgage if it up and slapped me in the head, and would be completely non-functional for the next three days. 24/7 is certainly not something I could offer (but I'll keep those of you who do it in mind in case anybody ever asks! )

I see the 24 hour service advertised on many NAS profiles. Most are women! I don't think many of you actually understand what 24 hour service really means. In my entire career as an NSA (9 years) I have never had a Loan Signing assignment scheduled for 1 to 5 am. They just don't happen. However in those 9 years I have also taken many hundreds of notary assignments after midnight for all kinds of notarizations. My record is 4 in one 12 - 6 am night. That's 24 hour service.
I have met the signer on the pedestrian bridge at the San Diego /Tijuana Boarder at 3 am. I have gone to "safe-houses" filled with sleeping Hispanic men at 2 am to notarize permission to travel forms. I often notarize on the trunk lid of my Toyota with the signer holding my flashlight. I even work with several Bail Bondsman that always call me after 1am for collateral notarizations. These can take an hour or more and the areas I go to are most always dark and dangerous. I sometimes wonder if this is where I get my occasional attitude because I sometimes start posting on this message board after a real scary one and I can't fall asleep.

Re: "24-hour service?" - suggestion for Harry!
I've wondered about that - I wish the profiles here had choices such as Available: "days" "evenings" "weekends" instead of 24-hr or not 24Hr.
24-hour to me implies availability outside regular 8-6 business hours.
I am available any time BUT regular business hours, so I check 24hr because I don't want anyone to think I'm only available during regular business hours. But if somebody calls for a 2pm Wednesday appointment, I'm not going to be available, so I guess I'm not really 24hr.

I do put my hours in my profile - but it would be easier for someone looking for a notary to be able to input a search field instead of reading through the profiles.

I am relatively new and I haven't had a late one yet. I will be available if I do get the call but I will charge for it. Judith, where in NY are you?
