general notary

Just a GENERAL question on fees. Got a call from someone who needs 1 doc notarized, and said last time she needed a notary in Tacoma, they only charged her $25? I agreed to do it for that, simply because I was meeting her about 10 blocks from my house, don't have to print anything or make copies...

Just curious if this seems a very low fee to the seasoned veterans?

You can only charge what your state allows you to charge for notarizations, plus a reasonable travel fee if your state allows you to charge a travel fee. Check your states notary handbook for your allowable fees.

WA is capped at $10 for 'witnessing or attesting a signature. Since there are two people signing, I guess $25 is fairly reasonable, considering the short distance.

Is the $10 fee per signature or per notarial act (which can cover more than one signature)? If the latter, you could only charge $10 for both sigs together. Either way, not bad money for 5 minutes work and a short drive.

When it come to "General" notary questions I could be sporting 4 stars. Signature fee plus travel is all you have to remember. I give receipts for this service although it's not required in my State of my Commission unless your asked for one. I would prefer the client decline a receipt then ask. The travel fee you can charge varies by State of Commission but nevertheless should be negotiated before you agree to travel.

Here in Washington the law states that a notary may charge a travel fee, provided that the notary and person requesting notarial act agree on the travel fee in advance, and that the notary explains that the travel fee is in addition to the notarial fee, and is not required by law.

The amounts are entirely up to negotiating.

and $2.50 per notarization (State of N.J. mandated fee)
