thread #168645 and American Society of Notaries
I have decided to not renew with the NNA. The ASN was discussed in thread #168645 as a better organization to join. When I went to their site I found no notaries in my immediate area. The closest one was 17 miles away. In this area that's far away. This could be good? The information by state is not updated for Washington. Our fees went up last November 1.
It is only $39 to join for a year but I find it hard to trust an organization that has outdated information about my state. And why aren't there any notaries listed in my service area?
Just wondering what the ASN supporters have to say. Thank you.

The bill for the increased fees was passed Nov 1? In WI usually there is the day it passed and the day it becomes in effect. Usually around 6 months ( Speaking as someone who has experienced the drawbacks of not waiting for the effective date). You could always bring it to their attention too. I have never belonged to the NNA so I can't compare them, but I find the ASN very informative. I would think it would be to your benefit being the only one listed in your area. The notary handbook lists the ASN first for organizations for notarys.

I belong to the ASN. I believe you have to request to be listed. I know they are working on the website - it is a new one and they are updating information. Remember they are not specifically for the signing agent, they are for all notaries (which is what the NNA was supposed to be for). I just renewed my membership and will continue to renew it as long as I remain a notary

Re: Dittos! Vicki....
I belonged to the NNA also and after one year decided it wasnt for me. I looked for other organizations that would fullfill what I was looking for. After researching I joined the ASN. They had incorrect info on our state as well. I called Don and told him the incorrect info and pointed him to the statutes where they were stated. He almost immediately changed the info. He was very thankful. And on another note, I have had lengthy conversations with him and he is very informative and understands what we go thru as mobile notaries on loan signings. I found him to be quite genuine in wanting to help notaries.

Don Verbocy is a super nice guy. I have had the pleasure of meeting him when I taught classes for them. Everyone at the ASN is super nice. As soon as I saw the original post I made him aware of the change in notary fees, so I expect it will be corrected soon.

Re: What is a Notatire? For tose who speak French of Spanish
it is a person who throws letters: a Nota tire Depending on the letter (especially the wood or metal ones) they can be very dangerous indeed. Ok, ok, for the grammar police it probably should be tire Nota to be syntactically correct.

The "F" is right under the "R" on my keyboard and when
my fat little fingers start flying around the keyboard sometimes they miss. So now we have spelling police, grammar police, and typing police, I need a rear-view mirror! Do they make radar detectors for the forum police????

Re: What is a Notatire?
This is just a guess, but since someone brought up French and Spanish... Could it be that the French for "Notary" is "Notaire" and there's just an extra "t"? No idea why they would have stuck a French word in there, though... so it still doesn't explain anything.

...American Society of Notatires Logo...
This what was in the ad...I'm guessing that whoever typed it just added an extra "t," and reversed the "r" and the "i." Someone typing to fast, and not paying attention. The bright side is, we've had fun making fun of it!
notatires should be notaries

American Society of Notaries EXCELLENT organization
I belong to a number of professional associations, including the ASN.
I feel it is well worth the membership fee to joing. This is an organization for NOTARIES PUBLIC. It does not promote signing agent business, how to make a profit from your notary commission, or other ventures to turn your public official office into a profit-making business.
Although smaller than the NNA, I like the organization for their informative response, ability to talk with a knowlegeable person (staff is small, so don't expect instant gratification) and member relationships. If WA is out of date on the web site, Email - they WILL correct the information.
Why are they no notaries in your service area: Listing is not mandatory and if you want to use your membership in ASN as an ADVERTISING site for your business, it may not be for you. If you want another source (or different perspective) of educational information on what Notaries Public are about, then this is an excellent resource.
