Background Checks

Did anyone get a bulletin from Service Link concerning background checks today?

Was it from Service Link?

Yes it was. Stating to send them either a background done by a reputable company less than 1 year old or from NNA if it was done after Jan 23, 2007 or it needs to be recertified again if done before that date.

Are they connected with NNA? They recommend NNA to get the check done. I have had a background check, but it is several years old!

I really don't know it shouldn't make a difference.

Actually jojo, there are some interesting ramifications...

Remember in the Fall when NNA made this big push for everyone getting the BGC done before a certain date so that they could comply. Well now all those who jumped on the bandwagon need to have their BGC done again. I believe the reason for that is that NNA jumped the gun and didn't carefully evaluate the depth of the BGC necessary tomeet the requirements of Gramm-Leach-Bliley and Oxley-Sarbanes (if you are incorporated) and now they have to have the BGC redone so that they are in compliance. If I had done my BGC when the NNA wanted it I know I would be terribly upset that I had to re-do it at my expense. I suspect that is also why Harry wanted us to watin until the end fo the year.

Re: Actually jojo, there are some interesting ramifications...

I wondered if I'd read the post that started this right. As the NNA started this mess, they surely ought to redo the early ones for free. It's the right thing to do.

just ask them.

i don't believe that the GLBA requires notaries to have BGC's.......this has been talked up by nna in order to drum up profits........jmho

You are right Dick, but GLB charges others to develop

the procedures. Since GLB is the root cause everybody just seems to like to refer to it as GLB. However you wish to characterize it the requirements are there and GLB started the ball rolling down the line.

Re: You are right Dick, but GLB charges others to develop

Actually, the wording was (not a direct quote...just the gist) 'have 'em sign an agreement to protect the privacy'...yada, yada. NO BGC required. That spin was added 7 years later.

I sent an e-mail last night to one of the article writers at NNA since my background check was done before 1/23 - I'll let you know if I get a reply.

Larry,

I've seen the bulletin.

I don't have a background check and won't be getting one.

Haven't had enough business from Service Link over the past couple of years to justify one.

I've had quite a few calls from them...last minute stuff..but they don't want to pay my fees.

Sooo, if and when they get desperate enough, they'll do both: meet my fees and go without a background check.

Re: Well...I know one thing...

I had mine done last October (never had one before so no biggie - just another credential to add) - I'm NOT doing it again - at least not at my own expense - I still have not had one company ask for it.

Re: Update just for the record

I logged into my NNA account - says my BGC is good through 7/2008. AND I have not been told that I need to get it done again....so far...<G>
