Canceling Companies

I have seen a lot written about slow pays and no pay. I haven’t seen an effort to put together a list of companies that tend to cancel out. I think I lose more money from cancellations then slow or no pays. There are several companies that I wont do a signing for (especially EOM) because I have taken a job from them, another company calls with a closing and I pass, then at the time the closing is suppose to take place I get a call that the closing has been cancelled or moved. I have tried to institute a cancellation fee of 25.00 if I get less then 2 hours notice that a closing has been cancelled. I have not had any luck collecting. Any one else have a cancellation policy or would like to put together would suggest names to put on this list. I have also found the companies that cancel the most are usually the cheap ones. This is another reason not to take the closing in the 1st place.

It's hard enough to collect from SS and TC for no signs, good luck on the cancellations. I've been burned by that same scenario more than once. It isn't fair but i've accepted that it's just part of business. I have seen a few companies that have a cancellation policy and pay for them when there is only two hours notice so it isn't unheard of, but i think it's the exception rather than the norm.

I have 2 companies that I work with that *routinely* have to cancel, postpone, etc. They are the only companies that I will double-book myself for jobs. I have spoken with them & I am upfront about their situations. I do get the call back when it's back on & finally going through, which I try to accomodate when I can. It is the nature of the beast for these 2 companies for whatever reason. I just accept the fact & move on.

Cancellations from other companies are few & far between, so instituting a cancelation policy really wouldn't be worth the time & effort to invoice & chase for payment. If it cancels after I print docs, that's another story because I'm out actual quantifiable expense.
