How many pages should a drum print?

I have recommended several times ( classes and on this message board) that the Brother MFC 8860 I purchased in Oct 06 was a good printer to buy and then I found out that the drum is only good for 25,000 pages.

I want to post that I didn't understand the drum limitations in the Brother.
Duh!!
Everyone who posted and said a HP printer was a better choice is correct.

I have a HP 1300 that must have over 150,000 pages and then today it sounds like its on its last leg.

There is a sound coming out of the back of the printer that I have never heard in my life.

You can't turn the TV loud enough to over come the sound from the back of the 1300.

Its still printing and I have a new drum from Brother for the 8860 to the tune of $203 on Monday.
I am one day out of not have the ablility to print docs if the Hp1300 dies tomorrow.

I am in printer h...l I should have never left the HP family.
Cheers

If you decide to keep your brother, tonermax.com has drums for a lot less.

Your HP may just need new feed rollers

If you've never had to service your HP, it's likely the feed rollers need replacement. They do make a noise you can't ignore when it's time. I had a pair replaced in December for the cost of a on-site call and $23.98 in parts. I could have saved $30 by taking the printer in, but that baby is heavy, plus I'd have been without it for up to 10 days.

I bought my HP used for $40. It has just over 500,000 prints on it. The tech told me it will likely last many 100,000s of additional prints.

Joan, my brother printer(hl-5140DLT) has more than 75K pages printed with the original drum, all I do is just reset the drum count, I once clean the drum with piece of cotton cloth soaked with alcohol per some advice from a lady in FL I think, reset the drum count, you dont need a drum till after 100K pages. That's another way for the printer's makers for more revenue.

How do you reset the drum count? Mine printer has said you need to replace drum soon for over 3 toner cartridges.

How do you reset the drum count-HL 5140

Ppen the door to the toner and drum, hold the "go" button and it will reset.
I think this is good for HL 5150's as well.

Joan, check the manual. The message change drum comes on long before it is needed. You can check the printer by looking in the idex of the manual, under Checking the drum life and it will tell you how much life is left in it.

Injetsuperstore dot com also sells

drum units for a lot less. Great tip about cleaning the drum and resetting count! Thanks, I think I will try that.

My Brother 5170DN drum is 2 yrs old, over 200K pgs & still

thumpin' 'em out like clockwork.
When my drum lights flash, I clean the drum using rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth. Let it dry completely. Replace toner cartridge into the drum unit. While front cover is open, hold the "Go" button until all 4 lights are steady, then release the button. That resets the drum counter and makes those nasty "replace drum" lights go away.
I bought a replacement drum once that was substandard, used it for a while, and put the original one back in after I cleaned it and it hasn't let me down Smile

Lisa, that's funny. My original drum has outlasted the printer itself.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I trully appreciate all the help.

I am out the door to buy some alcohol and try to clean the drum.

There is no reset button

But in order to reset it, the front panel that covers the toner and drum should be open, and push the "go" button" to reset.

Check your email Joan

I sent you the emanual, which outlines how to reset the drum on page 132.
Remove the drum for a minute and while the door is still open, press 1 to indicate you have
installed a new drum.
That fools the machine and makes it think you have installed a new drum.
