Last minute signings

Friday I get a call about 5:30 pm from a title company that offers $90.00 for a standard closing including the print fee. Call goes like this. We need a favor this is schedule to close tonight and we need some one to do it ASAP. It’s10 minute drive from where live and I didn’t have plans set in stone so I said ok. My fee will be 150.00. The response was we pay 90.00. Then it went to let me check with my manager then they started saying how about a 100...110...115. I told him I was about to go out to dinner with my wife and that “my” standard fee was 125 per closing and 25 for a print doc fee. They said they could see what they could do. I never heard back from them. Here are my 2 questions. What does anyone else charge for a last minute closing and 2 who was the person in the Raleigh area who accepted this closing on a Friday at 5:45 for 90.00; I hope the closing took 2 hours

I think your fee was fair and appropriate. Keep in mind, the notary who accepted the job may not be a NotRot member. If you really want to know who took the assignment, just wait a month or so and check w/the Probate judges office and view the recorded mortage document. I can do it online here in Alabama. My toughest competitors are NOT Not/Rot members.

$125-150 is a fair fee for a last minute closing with a SS. I charge $200 for title companies for a last minute request.

I charge the same for a last minute closings that I do for any others. This is a last minute business, always has been. I am available 24/7 and don't mind the last minute calls if they are willing to meet my fees. The only times I don't accept the closings are on horse show days.

I got a call at 2pm on Friday for a $90 closing in Raleigh. I told them that I would not accept less than $xxx. Must be the same company still looking for a notary to meet their fee.

Why so bitter?

You stated your side they stated theirs and they found someone else to do it. Why do you care who did it? Lets say you found out who did it and it only took 30 minutes, would you kick yourself in the butt for passing it up? Let it go.

Re: Why so bitter?

Bitter is not the point here. That same $90 company (and we all know who it is) called me today to do a closing that needed 2 mortgages printed and 2 of all affidavits, 2 HUDS and any docs relating to the HUD, and it was a split package on top of that. Of course, the scheduler didn't advise of all this when she called. When I received the confirmation, I noted all this "extra stuff" and called her back and told her $90 was not sufficient for this excessive printing and extra work. Her response, "Oh. So you won't do it for $90? I'll call another notary," and hung up.
Yet, yet, yet folks, I had a call from the same co last week and the scheduler ask me if $90 was alright. Since it was about 1/2 a mile from me, and there was nothing unusual about the doc package, I agreed.
I've done excellent work for this co for more than 4 years. I haven't lowered my standards or the quality of my work. They should not be treating their "established" notaries like they are a disposable diaper.
Frankly, I'd love to know which low baller in my area took this closing.
The last "mess" I cleaned up for a low baller, this notary went in and left the borrowers nothing but 1 RTC and 1 HUD - no other docs what-so-ever.
And yet, I'll bet you a week's pay (which isn't much these days) that they'll keep calling that low ball notary because she's cheap.
Just my 2 cents.
