Have you considered Bed & Breakfast places? Trading homes? EBay vacation homes? I got a great one in NC that way that I plan to use every year for 3/2 on river $395 wk., and plan to go to Spain that way. Can find something anywhere in world. Idaho in winter $150 wk for 2 bed mtn. cabin. Usual travel search engines for hotels, etc. While you are waiting for e-docs, search around...you have plenty of time. Good luck.

Cool... as a matter of fact I just booked a room on the north shore of Oahu for final week of the Billabong Banzai Pipeline Masters. 12-14 through 12-20. What time of year were you planning on going?

Try this...
We did a cruise that visited all the major islands. The ship is your hotel, and all meals are included. Norwegian Cruise Lines has several trips of 7-10 days all round the islands. Highly recommend it to see the most for your money.

Re: Try this...wonderful suggestion Roger.
It's a great value as you can do a whole cruise covering all the islands with meals, shows, activities, etc for what it would cost for just a few days of a hotel stay only. You can also tack additional land time on before or after if you want.
We did the 10-day Hawaiian cruise which included a southerly trip to Fanning Island, about 1000 miles south near the Equator (where scenes from Gilligan's Island were filmed). A serene jewel in the middle of the Pacific, and a great complement to the Hawaiian itinerary.

Re: What island or islands?
My husband, a helicopter pilot, flew for a helicopter tour company (on the big island) about twenty years ago. If you go, may I suggest taking one of these tours. You won't be sorry.

Years ago I stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel on Maui. It's now called the Wailea Marriott Resort. The website shows its been undergoing a renovation that will complete in Sept. 07. Hotel & beaches were great but still touristy.

My family and I took a vacation in May of 2004 and I used Hawaii 4 less. We went to Maui and it was about $2500 including airfare from CA. 5 nights 6 days, a one bedroom condo. It was a great deal and we had a blast.

Times have changed haven't they? How many people was that for? I'm just curious. I was just checking out that website and it would cost us double to fly from where I live now, plus there are 2 more people. Grandpa and our 2 year old peanut.

Talk to a good travel agent. If the first few you call don't deliver, call someone else until you hit on a good one. You'll know when you find her/him.
I worked in the travel industry for 35 years. Have been to Hawaii 21 times, and I prefer Maui and Kauai over the others. Oahu is just too 'cement jungle' for me, and as far as the big island of Hawaii, the weather was never very good whenever I was there. Maui and Kauai are more laid back, and with wide open spaces. Oahu, or I should say, Honolulu, has buildings so close together you can't even see the beach anymore except from a few areas. If you go to Honolulu, I'd only spend a few days and then go on to the outer islands.
Again, a good travel agent is worth their weight in gold. They can work up several models for you based on what you are looking for, and will recommend properties and things to do. Before you pick an agent, ask if they've been there. Or ask if the office has a Hawaii expert.
Good luck. Hawaii is one of my favorite destinations.
