Tell me if I am wrong here...
Got a call from a signing company, never done a closing for them before. There reputation is pretty good here so I took the closing. Got an email of several fax backs and let him know that I charge extra for fax backs and if it does not close, I get the full fee. Now, I have 2 closings before this one tonight so I needed the docs by 5:30. Got a call at 5:15 to wait until he calls me back because he has to get the additional fee "approved". He emails me at 5:29 to let me know that he doesn't need me to do the closing.
I shoot him an email back congratulating him on finding someone cheaper and thanking him for wasting my time. He sends me another email telling me how unprofessional I am and how he is going to share his experience with me with other companies. Ooohhh, I'm scared.
Did I over-react on this one or is he right? I only increased my fee by $10 and he finds someone else, come on.

eom crazies. 2 calls today; same co, same scheduler, same signing, same fee quoted. they took it the 2nd time. Of course, 5 hours later, I'm still waiting for CO. Another one 25 min. ago---crisis emergency tonight--meet fee; docs ready...go, go, go, go. Still don't have docs OR the fool CO.

No I don't think you over-reacted, you were too pleasant as far as I'm concerned.

You're wrong here.
I mean... you were provoked, and what he did wasn't cool... but venting and being sarcastic with the client is never a good thing.
tempting, but not good.
If nothing goes wrong, what did you gain? If he does spread some venom what could you lose? If nothing else, you're toast with that particular company.
Not a the end of the world, but gritting your teeth and screaming after you hung up woulda been a better way to go.

Re: You're wrong here.
I have to agree with Gary. Seems like they never tell me I'm going to have fax backs until after I get the comfimation. I do sometimes try to get more out of them, but when it's all said and done you need to leave it on a good note.

Re: You're wrong here.
Thank you all. I should have hung up the phone and screamed.

Re: You're wrong here.
You should have told him that you also can share your experience with the NOTROT community. Its a 2way street.

By the way, I never said you didn't deserve a good scream...
or even that what you told him (or much much worse) wasn't justified...
I just think that we should encourage each other towards absolute best business practices... and biting the toung is up there on the top 10 right next to keeping' track of your money.
IMHO

I get so frustrated. Call me at the last minute to do something and then get someone else, that is poor business practice to me. I did email him back and asked him to step in my shoes for one minute. I also did not appreciate him threatening me to tell the companies he works with about his experience with me. I have been doing this for 11 years, full time, I am thankful for every company I work with, thank God I do 95% of my work for attorney and title companies and not the middle man signing service. I have made it this far without this guy. I'll be fine.

I am in no way judging what you did, we all do things we in the heat of the moment and most of the time I end up regreting it, but end up learning from the experience.
The only thing I wanted to say is that we should not burn our bridges, even if you are leaving a job that treated you like crap and you just want to tell them all to take a hike.... I left a job that treated me poorly for many years and when I left I made sure it was on a great note no matter how much I wanted to say something nasty. Two years later I end up doing some work for my current boss and guess who is the other attorney in the case...my old boss. I had to work with her for several weeks and I was so thankful I did not leave on a bad note. You never know when you will run in to these people again.
Just a thought that may not work, but thought I might put it out there anyway... To stop some of this crap where they choose the person who is cheaper than you at the last minute, can we as notaries protect ourselves with a signed statement by the client? Meaning, we send the client a one page document that simply states we get (?) % of the agreed fee if they back out within (?) hours/minutes prior to closing (except where the B has to change the day. etc...). The question is, would they just turn you away immediately if you put a statement on the table?

Green...good news...You don't have to be held captive waiting for fresh answers on issues such as these which have been asked and answered many times. Give the orange search button a whirl while you are waiting to get the latest thoughts.

I have given the search button a whirl...many many many times and am thankful for it, but in this particular case I was really not asking any one to give me an answer. It was actually just a thought I was proposing and not really a question. Sorry for the confusion.

I went back and read my response message and it sounded pretty sarcastic and it was not meant to be. I was basically just saying that I hope no one feels that have to respond to my message with an answer, but that they read it as just a thought. If it is a thought that interests someone, they may want to research it.
And now that I posed the issue, I might check out the answer as well. I am always curious and love to do research when I have time (2 year old at home).
Thank you and have a great day.

It would have probably been better somehow (though I cannot see it right this minute) in the big scheme of things if you'd have held back on the smart a$$ response..probably just for your own edification of not letting the hairy ingrates get to you...however, what have you lost? A lying SOB who is threatening you with exposure?
Rest easy and be absolved by the Blabber Babbler from Texas.
