Re: Clarification - I could be wrong,
but bankruptcy cases should be published somewhere on line. It's public record.
  Try USCourts.gov ... maybe???

you need to know if he has....
filed or not as you are prohibited from hounding him for your money while a bankruptcy is in progress.....you could be sanctioned from the feds if you do.......

Yes, but you have to register for online access
This is where one registers: http://www.pacer.psc.uscourts.gov/
At my last corporate job (a year ago), we shared a login ID/PW among a group of us which provided online access to all federal courts' records, including bankruptcy. There were nominal charges incurred when accessing docket sheets and/or documents available on line. Maybe the information concerning a particular filing was free--name(s), date, type, etc., but fees were incurred for any information beyond that. It wasn't expensive--a few cents per page to look at docket sheets; a little more expensive per page for copies of docs downloaded. We were billed quarterly, I believe, for the charges.
One can probably still go into a specific clerk's office to check for a filing, but that's a bit of a hassle, and usually not convenient to the inquiring party. And there once was a way to check an automated system by phone, which may still exist. Again, I think that was district-specific.
I recall at one time the online access provided means for a global search of all districts simultaneously, but it has been years since I used that. The thing about verifying a filing is that unless you have such online access with a global search feature, you have to know the actual district in which it was filed in order to find it.
My suggestion is to ask someone claiming to have filed for a copy of the notice to creditors, or at the very least, identification of the district in which the petition was filed and the case number, which should give you enough info to verify the filing and identify the debtor's name (or debtors' names in the case of a joint filing).
Where you go from there depends on the circumstances. The majority of filings are Chapter 7 no-asset, meaning there will be no distribution to creditors. The notice to creditors advises whether it is an asset or no-asset case at the time of filing. That can change, but doesn't often.

Good on you for getting someone to check
Not all clerks' offices will do that.

  Re: United Notaries/Deans Notary - sdsjcc - dick didn't
say you were wrong, he just told you that you have to be careful if they have indeed filed or you will be harrassing them.
I have worked in an atty office where we got written notice of bankruptcy from the court on clients' filing br. Once that happens you don't call them, write them, notta.

I was happy to have received payment from United Notaries until now when my bank informed me that the check is being returned for insufficient funds. Their phones are disconnected and the website is no longer there. Any info that anyone can give me to contact United Notaries or the principals of United Notaries would be appreciated.
  Thanks in advance.
