sent me a check for $55.00 (borrower xld) and then it is NSF - how can a business stay in business when they can't honor a $55.00 payment???

They can't. Still trying to collect? Would you take another signing from them? NSF on a small check (when compared to other business expenses) seems like a red flag to me.
