Another Pet Peeve . . .
In January, 2008 there will be new laws regarding notarial duties (the majority of which I've always done.).
However, what really irritates me is that the XYZ Association is holding a three hour PAID seminar to "train" "old" and "new" notaries alike. Price starts at $79.00 (for the basic class without the notary supplies etc. . .).
This IS NOT brain surgery! All someone needs to do is go to the SOS website and it explains, in simple terms what the new rules are.
And it's FREE! Why isn't this broadcast too?
Enough Already!

These
changes are for California notaries.

It's funny you say that.... because everytime I go to XYZ to lookup something,,,, the state is always set at CA...... I have alway found that "strange". shouldn't it be "Alaska" ?
CA and a few others are much more rigid than Tx..... which can be good and bad.... but why have to pay to learn the update? Can it be so complicated that you have to hire ($79.) someone to teach you....... (LOL/question in jest)??

You know Pamela, I was thinking the exact same thing as you when I received this mailer. I thought, "Boy, that didn't take them long." Why would anyone pay this price to receive free information. Three hours to tell a notary to positively I.D., no personal knowledge, thumbprints for Deeds and POA's. Follow the laws of your state, etc.
I do thumbprints on every signing I've ever done from day one. Deed or no deed. Other law changes are pretty straight forward and not difficult. I think it's shameful. Also the charge for certificates and get a thumbprinter for all those new prints you'll be taking. Geez!

On the flip side
The people who are stupid enough to pay $79 to learn about these changes are also people who very likely don't know squat about notary law to begin with. Couldn't hurt for them to sit through 3 hours of training, even if it is crappy NNA training.
