Good morning - Thursday

Back in my teens (in the year 19 something or other) I used to sit in front of the TV and watch Gerry Dorsey. Nice man, great voice. He was fairly popular in England. Then his manager persuaded him to change his name. His first single under his new name was first heard on a new radio station - Radio 1. Then Dickie Valentine (another of my favourites) had to cancel an appearance on the TV show Sunday Night at the London Palladium. Gerry replaced him, and his career took off. You all know him as Engelbert

His name changed from Jerry Dorsey to Englbert Humperdink!
I mean, I'd just like to be in the room when they were working that one through:
"Zinglebert Bambledack! Yingeebert Dangleban! Zanglebert Dingleback! Winglebert Humptiback! Slut Bunwallah!" "What?"
"All right, Kringlebert Fishtibuns! Steveibuns Buttrentrunden …" "No, Jerry Dorsey! I like–" "No, we can't … let's see, we have Zinglebert Bambledack, Dinglebert Wangledack, Slut Bunwallah, Klingibum Fistlbars, Dinglebert Zambeldack, uh … Jerry Dorsey, Englerbert Humptiback, Zinglebert Bambledack, Engelbert Humperdinck, Dinglebert Wingledank …" "No, no, go back one!"

Yes, he changed his name from Gerry DorseySmile His real name was Arnold Dorsey though. He took on the stage name Gerry Dorsey after someone nicknamed him Gerry because of his Jerry Lewis impressions on stage.
There was a TV show in the late 50's called "Oh Boy", his early TV appearances were on that show.
Sir Cliff Richard, Dame Shirley Bassey, John Barry, Marty Wilde and Billy Fury all made early TV appearances on the show. Even had some US stars on it, The Inkspots; Conway Twitty and Brenda Lee.
Gerry contracted TB and was out of commission for about a year, and when he returned his career was sliding down. That is when he and his manager decided he needed a name change. Not only did he change his name but his appearance. His hair became black and he grew these long sideburns. The rest, as they say, his history.
