Helluva site!

I'm not sure where to post this. It isn't politics, and it isn't leisure. So, on the theory that reading all them thar legal documents probably has ruined the eyes of a lot of NSAs, I'm putting it here.

There is site on the web where for $8 plus $4.95 shipping you can get eyeglasses, including the frames, lenses, and even a case. That's right: $8.

All you need is your prescription and a ruler with centimeters (to measure the distance between your pupils). It also would be helpful to find a pair of your existing glasses with the temple and nose bridge measures on the inside of the earpiece, but that's not absolutely necessary.

The site has lotz and lotz of options for frames, colors and lens shapes. It also offers -- for an additional fee, of course -- bifocals with or without lines, sunshade clip-ons tailored for your glasses, and other goodies. I haven't received them yet, but I ordered a pair of bifocals; with shipping and a couple of extras, including frames that were slightly higher priced, the total came to a whopping $39.85.

The site, if you're interested, is jennioptical.com. Check it out; it'll blow you away.

If you're seeing halos, your eyes are too dry.

Use some artificial tear drops made for contacts.

Jennioptical is a "searchnut" directory site. I think the actual site that Hugh is referring to is http://www.globaleyeglasses.com/ which offer highly discounted glasses starting at $7.99.

I have used this site...

http://www.zennioptical.com with excellent results. Bought three pair of glasses (one bifocal, one sunglasses, and one single vision) for less than $100.
I'm hard on eyewear. To me, glasses are almost disposable Frown

Re: I have used this site...Lisa

Thanks so much for that link. I just ordered a pair of plain, near-sighted glasses for myself.

Got the $9.95 frames...total drive out: $14.95.

If I got my Rx put in there correctly, I will probably order five more pair.

Sorry: I posted an incorrect site: The correct address is zennioptical, NOT jennioptical. Guess I was sleepwalking.

See Lisa's post below.

My friends have them, but I am trying to spend

at least 3 months this year not buying anything Chinese. So far it has been going fairly well, what I have learned is that about 90% of our shoes, most electronics and a good deal of our food comes from China. I don't have anything against globalization or for that matter against the Chinese, but I have noticed a quality difference after shopping these last months and I probably will hold out as long as possible.

I also find it quite interesting that there are quite a few folks on this board who rail against the undercutters amongst us in our profession. Though when opportunity arises do the same thing to their neighborhood Optician they do it to him/her in a heartbeat. There's a store here in Portland that will do an eye exam and two pair of glasses for $100.00 and if there is a problem there is a real live human to talk to, I'll stick with them. I guess when push come to shove it all boils down to whose ox is being gored.

Re: My friends have them, but I am trying to spend

It's about value received, Phillip. Zenni is delivering a product; if they can make that product cheaper and still turn a profit, there is no reason to go to someone higher >>just for the product.<< For something beyond that -- a real live fitting, for example -- it's a different matter. You pay then what YOU think it's worth.

We, on the other hand, are delivering a service, with all sorts of intangible expenses to factor in. The judgement on the board is generally that below a certain level of cost, the service delivered is no longer profitable.

When Zenni's $8 glasses no longer pay the rent, Zenni will raise the price. If $50 closings don't pay our rent, we don't accept them, and we don't think other people should either because at that level the closing aren't profitable for them, either. I don't see any inconsistency in that whatsoever. Either way, both Zenni and Phillip Johnson are going to set their fees based on profitability.

Using that theory as a lawyer, I would think

you have no problems with someone using Legal zoom or Will maker instead of a local lawyer.
He seems to me that if one has a simple life situation that using these services will be fine and that the services of a local lawyer are not necessary. If one can trust their vision instrument to the Chinese, surely one should be able to trust OJ's old lawyer at legal zoom?

Re: Using that theory as a lawyer, I would think

Why would you think I would have a problem with that, Phillip? If inexpensive legal services are effective, why should people not use them?

In fact, I believe in socialized law. I think we should have one great big public pool of lawyers, and everybody -- Exxon, the homeless guy, ACLU, Aunt Em, Donald Trump -- should have to take a ticket to use one of the pool lawyers, and you could never have more lawyers than your opponent.

Of course, I also think those pool lawyers should be paid with public funds, and should make $500 an hour...

I have ordered at least 5 pair through them. I get the progressive, shaded. I have a very strong lens requirement and they are able to do them, although it takes longer. They cost between $90 and $110. To get my glasses locally, I usually pay over $450 a pair. I can put them on immediately and see perfectly.
