Since you are in my state, I want to add
I used to get regular work from a well-known PA title company at $125/edocs. It dried up. Then I started getting calls from an Ohio SS for the same title company's files. The SS was now getting my calls because they had undercut my fee by $25.
Although I like this SS and consider the owner to be my friend, I cannot see how an SS can lower their fee below mine and I now refuse all files from this SS for said title company despite our friendship.
Tony: I just don't understand how SS's can lower their fees and still stay viable. Lowering your notary fee is only going to make it harder to find experienced notaries leaving you with the very green ones. Eventually, title starts getting incomplete, incorrect, poorly printed files back and you are going to lose the client. Then you will have to start working harder and longer hours and possibly hire help because you're going to have to start babysitting and requiring fax backs. I really don't see how you can come out ahead. You provide a service to the title companies and it seems they want that service for free.
I have a home office and business office I pay rent on, $500K liability E&O, laser printer, copier and fax wired to my car, dual tray laser printers in both my offices, 59,000 miles on a car I bought less than a year and a half ago and I don't even add up the gas - too depressing. Please do not undercut the notary fees. I'm not cutting mine because my service is worth it and you have to believe yours is too.

Tony, I'll work with you on my fees for two reasons:
1. You are the cream among signing services; and
2. You have actually been paying me more than my standard fees, and more than I billed for.
Alone, neither of those might be enough to elicit any slack from me. In combination, the two factors are compelling.
While we're working on reducing my fees, though, how about seeing if you can get the title companies to reduce THEIR fees for title insurance and endorsements?

I suspect that babysitting is a code word for using the
$40 and $50 notaries who need to be under constant surveillance so that ultimately a useable product is delivered.

I would not worry about cutting your fees. As long as you pay quickly you will have plenty willing to take low fees. Just look at all the notaries who love LandAm and FASS. They pay $40-$50 a signing but pay quickly. You can find lots of posts from those who love them.

The easiest way to sell
is to reduce the price. The best way to sell is to stress your quality. You can either deliver something good, fast or cheap -- pick any two. If it's good and fast - it will not be cheap, if it's fast and cheap - it will not be good, if it's good and cheap - it will not be fast. Unfortunately, if you lower your prices too much you will not be able to deliver even one of the three. Keep stressing your quality and speed!
