UPDATE: SUCCESS Goverment commision or mine?

Hi,
Hooray! Here is the update an older posting regarding my questioning of my University asking me to give up my commission/supplies since I no longer filled the role of "Campus Notary". I wrote to the the actual policy makers who oversee all State Universities. I copy and pasted the University policy and the State of California Handbook as it relates to termination.

This is the response I received.

Hi Marisa,

I just renewed my notary commission and I agree. Even though the University asked you to be a notary, if you leave service of the University, you take your notary commission with you and I do not think you need to surrender you stamp and supplies. I understand that we are agents of the State Secretary's office for as long as our commission is in effect. You may need to send a letter to the State to change your mailing address depending on if you used a specific campus address. I think we need to update the Notary Bulletin and I will work with the office here to do that. If there is some one in the Business office that you would like me to speak to about this, I would be happy to do so. Please let me know.

Karen

A week and a half later the University sent out to all campus their REVISED policy on Notary Publics.

Glad I asked!!!!!

Marisa

1st and foremost, the commission is in YOUR name, not the University's. 2nd - the law states that your seal and journal, et al., must/is required to remain in your possession. If you were to resign your commission, you would destroy your seal, and send all journals to the County Clerk where your oath and bond are on file.

So the University's request is illegal, and it is illegal for you to do so!

Question - Is Karen with the California Secretary of State? or with XYZ? I've had a couple of students obtain incorrect information from XYZ, I always advise them to contact the SOS for answers.

Maybe I should have given a bit more background. My University (A state University) had a policy written saying I had to give up my commission and supplies. I wrote Karen (policy writer for my University) that our policy contradicted the SOS. Hence, the success of the University rewritting their policy to coincide with the State or Ca.
