UPS drop box problem

I dropped docs on Mon in the usual UPS box and I got a call from TC Wed afternoon looking for their docs..Can't track them. Early this morning I went to the box just to see if their was anything wrong. I found someone had placed a large package and it had jammed the box and I was able to reach in and retreive the docs! I took a picture of the jam and emailed the TC. Apprarently the driver had not noticed this! I will meet the driver there tomorrow and make sure this jam is cleared!
My question is this..What are the ramifications of this, since the docs did not get back to TC and now they will not get them till Mon?
Thanks in advance for help with this..

Assuming the loan is subject to rescission and was signed the same day you dropped the envelope, it wouldn't fund until Monday anyway (since rescission runs until midnight Friday due to the holiday) - so funding might be delayed by a day. The TC may or may not make a big deal about this.

A suggestion - whenever I use a drop box, I make it a habit to listen for the sound of the envelope actually landing inside the box. If I don't hear it land, I open the door again and see if it's stuck. More than once, some idiot managed to cram a large package into the box deep enough to block the opening while still allowing me to slip in an overnight envelope and close the door. If I can't quickly dislodge the package, I retrieve my docs and move on to the next drop box.

Good advice, Mike.

Wasn't it a Candid Camera episode where the mail was tossed back out after the person opened the door the ~second~ time...it was (still is?) a cultural thing; that one always checked that there was nothing 'hanging' onto the safety shelf. Those rascals.

I think you're right about Candid Camera (although I'm dating myself by admitting it...). It used to be that you'd always see people double-pumping when they put a letter in the mailbox, which is what I guess inspired that bit...

Hi, Claudine. This isn't the first jammed box tale, and

I bet it won't be the last. Some people just can't wait in line like everyone else...

As for ramifications - life outside our control happens. You weren't negligent in performing your duty, and the people who rely on courier services accept the risks of the road just like everyone else. On the one hand, they don't want to pay any fees associated with pickups, and on the other they want docs dropped immediately. That's either a box (which us good enough for the US Mail) or a mail store, which, aren't generally 24 hr operations.

Not long ago, I happily met the UPS guy on a rural road going in while I was leaving a signing going out. Had two for him, including that job. Had the TR#s. SS calls next day, no docs. Told her the town, road, and time I handed off the docs. The driver was responsible for finding docs.

So, guess my point is, that unless one does something negligent, like forgetting to drop docs, then the ramification of late/missing docs rests with someone else, not the NSA.

I got a call also wanting to know where the docs were. I had dropped them in my usual place, but there was a little bit of construction going on--I had to climb over a very small impediment, but apparantly the pick-up driver had a snot on and didn't.
Had witnesses that day, and no problem. However I will not assume that UPS or Fed Ex drivers are going out of their way in this type of situation again.

Watch out using drop boxes during the holidays, I dropped a package last year 3 days before Christmas and I received a call from the TC on the 28th wanting to know where there docs were and told me that my tracking # wasn't in their system. I called UPS and they checked with the driver that was supposed to pick up at that box and it appears that the driver was getting behind on his deliveries and was skipping a lot of the drop boxes. The docs were still in the box, he hadn't picked up at the box for 10 days. I called the TC and gave them the information, they called UPS to verify with the person I talked to and I didn't get into trouble with them, but what a mess to clear up.

Re: All of these nightmare stories about drop boxes

together with my own personal preference of knowing the package is in someone's hands, is why I never use a drop box - the package is handed off at a manned facility and I get a receipt - I've hear too many stories about skipped boxes over the years..it's worth the extra few miles to me to go to The Mailbox Store or the local UPS/FedEx facility and know my package isn't left in the bottom of some box that may or may not get hit on their pickup route....JMHO

Re: All of these nightmare stories about drop boxes

I am the same way. I rarely use drop boxes. We do have a UPS drop box not too far that picks up at 8:00 pm and on occasion if I have a Friday night closing and a holiday is coming up I'll use it but that's about the only time I do this. I much prefer going to a mail store or like facility.

I never ever use a drop box either. I will drive to a drop store first and pay the gas. I get a scaned in recipt every time. Never had a proublem with any docs getting to where they need to be.

I always use drop boxes. In 4.5 years I've only once had Fed Ex miss a pickup, never had a problem with UPS.

I don't use drop boxes for the very reason posted above. I drive to the UPS Store either on my way home, same day after appt. or if closed, the next morn.

Re: All of these nightmare stories about drop boxes

I'd rather deal with the once in a blue moon problem of docs not getting picked up than spend the time and money going out of my way to put an envelope in somebody's hands. Which doesn't guarantee delivery anyway, that could get lost as easily as a drop box can get missed.

It's called cost vs. benefit analysis. You're spending hundreds of dollars a year to protect yourself from something that is extremely unlikely to happen in the first place, it's just a bad business choice. Much cheaper to just deal with the problem if and when it arises.

Re: All of these nightmare stories about drop boxes

Update..The nearest live location is 20 miles away, not oo convenient! But the problem was resolved. I had to drive 48 miles one way to a local office of TC. And send copy of docs, by UPS! UPS went the extra mile to get the docs picked up and the drop box was cleared! I also got to meet 2 TCs and I marketed to them! No problem, just lessons learned. I also got my fee bumped up for going the extra miles. Thanks to all who responded! Have a good weekend!
