I have several empty cartridges. Is there a special way to get rid of them?

Only if they are HP cartridges if they are you can take them to Office Depot they will give you a ream of paper in exchange. Staples will give you a store credit of $3.00 to use on a purchase.

If you are just getting started you probably want to do a search on refilling your own cartridges. It costs about $8 to refill your own toner cartridge.
