Just follow the instructions to reset the drum and you are ready for another 20K pages. I have one with almost 100K and still the original drum.

I had to order my drum overnight, the staples here does not carry it. Just follow what calnotary sugguested and you will be fine. My drum actually lasted 10 months I was pretty pleased.

How do you know when the drum is completely 'spent'
and does it damage your printer to keep using the same one without changing it?

Re: How do you know when the drum is completely 'spent'
The print quality will degrade to a point that the print will be very faint. You can buy the drum off of the internet for $30-40 and replace it yourself. You can reset the printer, and do another 20,000 before replacing. If you try to buy the part at office max etc, it runs almost $ 200.It's cheaper to buy another printer, then you have one for parts.

My original Brother 5170DN drum is going on 3 years...
with heavy use, and no print degradation. Clean it with a soft, lint-free cloth and use canned air to blow any excess toner out of your printer (and off the drum) occassionally and follow the drum reset instructions. I bought a spare when I purchased the printer 'just in case' and it still sits on a shelf, wrapped in bubble wrap

Speaking of drums....mine keeps jamming when I print more
than 1 package at a time. Could it be that the drum needs replaced? It's a Brother MFC 7420 and 2 years old. I'm debating on whether or not I should replace it. A service call (& clean up) could $116. I don't want to pay that to have them tell it can't be fixed, or for that matter, $200 more and I can buy a new printer. Any opinions.

Just ordered one as a portable to carry in my car.
I plan to take it into bwrs house to print last minute dox off of my laptop. Costco had a special for $140 Have you folks been happy with it???? I thought that it work a lot faster if I upgraded the 16mb internal memory to 528mb.
