I turned down a good notary gig tonite...
if any PA notary is interested, (j/k) I got a call from a guy who wanted me to notarize a car title. It was such an interesting story about losing his DL, so he had to sign his car title over to his friend. He (the caller) has his DL back now, and needs his car back, but his friend has died. (Apparently, you can't own a car in PA if your DL is revoked, so he put it in his friend's name.) Before the friend died he signed the car title, so all he needs is a notary to notarize it. I always tell people to go to one of the auto tag places, which is what I suggested to him. He said he didn't have any luck there there b/c his late friend had already signed it and they wouldn't notarize it if the person wasn't present to sign in front of them. (His friend can't sign in front of them, of course, b/c he's dead.) He told me he got my number from an attorney. A good attorney that tries to hook people up to break the law together, I guess! When I said I couldn't help him he said he had a lot of other notaries he could call. Did anyone else have this great offer tonite?

I bet the person who has title to the car isn't even dead. The car is probably stolen and the vehicle ID# replaced with a fake.
The only thing I would have done differently is in regards to the attorney.
Attorneys are clueless about notary law ... and a lot of other things. I know because I worked with them for 20 years.
I doubt the attorney intended for anything illegal to happen. The attorney who referred you probably just knows your reputation as a problem solver and a top notary.
So I would have called the attorney and thanked him for the referral. I wouldn't have mentioned anything about the situation - no need to educate him and he'd resent a lecture. I just would have thanked him to reward him for referring someone to me.
Simple behavior modification. Dog training methods work well with attorneys.

Something is wrong.... If your licence is revoked you may possess the car: it is your property, of course not to drive it.

You may own a car in PA if your license is suspended. But, you cannot get auto insurance (so if your policy expires while your suspension is ongoing, you are SOL, since you cannot get insurance). Without insurance the vehicle cannot be driven....Thus, many opt to transfer title if they have a long suspension....

Interesting enough, I got the same call yesterday (same guy I'm sure). My response was almost identical to yours. When I asked him where he got my name from, he said he got it from "Notary Rotary".

That is too funny! So, that's where he had a lot of notaries to choose from, here at NotRot! lol I was telling a friend of mine this story today and she said "You know, his story was probably true, because no one could make up a story that crazy". Did he tell you the friend commited suicide?

yeah, I'm sure the "suicide note" was to appeal to my "sensitive side."
