Dual Tray Printers and The Cost of Paper

I have 2 Brother MFC8860DN printers and I ordered 2 additional trays so I could pull legal and letter size when I print loan documents.

The cost of legal paper has sky rocket in the last couple of months and I am wondering if other loan signers are considering buying a dual tray printer or a 2nd tray for a printer they already have?

In Riverside CA at Sam's Club the difference between legal and letter is $15.66.

I have always printed the Borrowers Copy Econo mode and I am wondering if this truly saves much toner?

I can't see a difference between the copy to sign and the econo mode setting on the docs; it might be a little bit lighter but it looks pretty much the same to me.

What do you think?

How much and how many pages does your cartridge yield?
What's the cost for the trays versus getting another printer (dual tray) with high yield cartridge?

I went from HP4100 to HP4200 last year b/c I found that the HP4200 cartridge yield 12Kpg ($20) vs. 10Kpg ($19) on the HP4100. Cost wise, I get 2Kpg for only $1 more. The same for paper (as mentioned before) retail prices would be my last resort and I'd buy small quantity to use while looking for bargain. This is the only way I see fit in a shrinking (profit) market.

I'm using a dual tray HP and it does save some money. It's not just the cost of paper.
Depending on the type of printer, it has to do with the cost of toner cartridges. I started with an HP 1022 and was going through toner cartridges like crazy (about every 1500 copies).
The high-yield cartridge for the HP 4050 I'm using does about 10,000 copies. When researching printers for purchase I strongly recommend looking at the yield issue. In my area, the cost of paper between legal/letter isn't huge. I can still get legal at Costco or Sam's for about $38/case. I was getting some from Quill, but they haven't run any special on legal in quite a while. I certainly can't pay $8/$9 ream!

I have a dell 1720 and purchased the second tray about 3 months after the printer. Because the cost of legal paper was on the rise then. I figured that the cost of the tray would be cheaper in the long run than buying all legal. Legal here at sam's club was 38.00 while the letter was 26.00 so there is a huge difference. I also buy the toner on the high yield side as it will do more pages.

This was one way for me to save money. As I use less legal with the dual tray. The tray has basically already paid for itself in the form of saving of legal paper.

Legal $3.55 per ream

I'm with Andy. I switched from a HP 1320 to a refurbished HP 4200dtn which has a much higher yield and is faster as well.
Oh, the paper is still that price on-line from FedEx,
Joan, there is a store near me that sells used printers and I've had very good luck with them.
If you would like their info. you may call or PM me.

Re: Legal $3.55 per ream

The website says, "For most items, orders with a subtotal over $50 will receive free shipping."

I know this has been posted multiple times but Quill.com is selling legal for $3.99 per ream (134S214300) and letter for $2.99 per ream (134S214307). If your total is at least $45, you'll get free shipping. If your total is at least $75, use coupon code YVH to get $15 off.
