Richmond Title - update

This is a follow-up to message #241124

Did a job for Richmond Title in February. On Monday I called them because by payment was over 45 days from date of service. The gal who answered the phone asked my name and after a moment said she "happened to have my check right here and will mail it today." According to the postmark, it was indeed mailed on Monday, March 31st, and it arrived today.

However, the check is dated February 18, 2008. So here's my take: They cut the checks, but hold them until the notary calls looking for their particular check. Then they find that notary's check in the stack of checks waiting for notary calls, and they mail it out when they receive the call. IMHO, Richmond Title has entered into Red Flag territory.

If they owe you payment, give them a call so they can get your check in the mail.

I must have missed your first post on the subject. I work for them often, the last payment came a couple of weeks ago two weeks after the asignment. I have never had to call them or follow up on the payment. Was this just one time this happened, or does it happen to you all the time? Personally, I would cut them some slack if one payment is way late, as, with me, they have a good payment record and sometimes people do overlook something now and then.

This was my first time working for them. After I did the job I began seeing posts about late payment. Someone who is also an abstractor posted that Richmond Title has been paying abstractors late for about a year - she sited the Source of Title forum.

I just have shades of EFS in the back of my mind. Everyone loved them and cut them all sorts of slack up until the day they closed their doors owing notaries and abstractors lots of unpaid invoices. In hindsight, there were many clues that foreshadowed the EFS closing. Most notably was the increasingly late payments. Nowadays it really raises my antennae when a company writes a check, has it almost instantly on hand over a month later when I call, and only mails it when I call to ask about payment.

But hey, I'm glad to have received it!

ummm... yeah.... if not red flags, at least yellow ones. Holding checks is not a real good sign.
