What is the best dual tray printer?

With the cost of legal size paper becoming more and more expensive (Sams Club Riverside CA legal paper cost has gone to $42.65 + tax up from $40 last week) a dual tray printer is beginning to make sense. Letter size today at Sams was $26.99.

We have been printing all the docs on legal size for the last 5 years and I don't think it will get you any busines but it could save a bunch of money.

I love my Brother MFC 8460N.
Cartridges are about $90, but I refill from tonerkits.com for about $20/delivered, about 5 times per cartridge.

Just yesterday, I picked up 27 reams of letter & 12 reams of legal for $40. As for printer, the HP4100 is still my best choice. I went through three HP4200 upgrade, but went back to the 4100 as I found there really was a flaw b/c the fuser (costly) unit failed in all of them after 6 months.

Technically speaking, the best printer is one that will put out a set of docs in less than 15 minutes with over all average cost (include papers) at less that $5/200pgs. There's still money to be made from the $25 edocs fee.

I know a lot of notaries are using Brother printers. I would recommend the HP 2015, 3000 series or 4000 series. I purchased a slightly used 4050 (business class printer) from an
office machines dealer. We set it up w/extra tray & extra memory. The initial cost (over $700) was a bite. I have found that it has almost paid for itself in savings on toner cartridges
(uses high-yield cartridges) that last for about 10,000 pages.

I have a brother HL-5170DNLT and LOVE it. I get toners thru LDProducts for 26.95. Their website is: www.LDProducts.com. Best I have found so far.

What about the drums? do you find you change the drum very often on that model? I have a Brothers 8440 and I have to purchase a drum every 30 days.

Wow! That seems like an expensive proposition! Have you considered getting an HP? It might make sense.

Janet do you print more than 100K pages/month?

Because I have a old 5140 that is more than 100K and it's on its original drum.

I have had my printer for about five years and have only had to replace the drum once or twice and I use it all day long.

I have a refurbished HP 4100. I absolutely love it. Glad to see that you are wanting a dual tray. Hard to imagine that you have been printing all legal for 5 years. What a waste of money and paper. (The enviornmentalist at heart talking here). I recycle anything I can. It drives me a little crazy when I get a pkg that prints out all legal knowing that the company is going to cut most of them off. Doesn't make sense when I have a dual tray.

I thought the drum was inside the cartridge on HP's?

I'm no techno-expert but I thought that the drum was located inside the cartridge on HP's and each time you replace the cartridge (with new) you are essentially replacing the drum.

Re: I thought the drum was inside the cartridge on HP's?

The drum is the "box" that your cartridge fits into.

Re: I thought the drum was inside the cartridge on HP's?

Yes, the drum is inside the cartridge on HP. I am going to order a 2nd tray for both of my
Brother 8860 DN printers. I think it will pay for itself over the next year.

As a side note I received my order today from www.quill.com for 2 cases of legal size paper
and I paid $32.40 per case plus tax ( the website said if it is a state other than CA you wouldn't have to pay sales tax.)

One thing I appreciated, as a woman, the reams arrived in 5 per case. Whew!
I ordered on Wed and arrived on Fri with free delivery because I ordered 2 cases.

This is the code and another person posted this on this website: 134-S-214300
