Why do notaries prefer legal and letter pages.....

through the docs. Why not just print them all in legal? It takes up so much more time setting the printer to print pages 1-28 letter then 29-31 legal, etc... Am I missing something? The lender said that most notaries like it better. Why? Could I print them all the same or is there a reason behind this? Thank you, Bev

"Notaries" like it better because letter is cheaper than legal. What you are missing is the proper equipment for this job. There is zero time involved when you've got the correct printer.

If you can't afford the correct printer

Print everything on legal paper to satisfy the lender and tc.
Do some homework here, use the search feature, reading 33325 and searching for "printer".

Bev, if you have a dual tray printer you set one tray to letter then the other to legal and then there is usually a checkbox or something to print on correct size paper and then the printer will print on both sizes depending on the page it is printing.

Letter paper is cheaper than legal so this is one way that you can get savings in the long run. I purchased my printer then a month later got the second tray. (it costs as much as the printer did). Now I do not use as much legal paper as I print some on letter. Legal paper here in Idaho is 38.00 a case where as letter paper is 24.00 a case.

I agree. Legal paper costs me 53% more than standard size when bought by the case. I hate it!

Also, I have noticed that some county recorders are trying to shift away from legal size due to filing/storage issues before they get transferred to digital format.

Get yourself a duel tray printer and it will eliminate your problem.

A few are particular. Want both sizes.

But they'll usually state how they MUST be printed. If unstated, default to legal.... or sit there & fool around switching back & forth. However, if you spend a few minutes now, you will find out that if your print features are properly set up, you will only have to switch the paper & not mess with computer screens to change things. Put the legal in your one tray, pile letter on top & remove/replace as necessary.

What we prefer...

I think everyone would prefer a letter only world, but that ain't happening...

But we do prefer the package in the right order even though the page sizes are mixed. Every now and then someone will send e-docs with all the letter in one PDF and the legal in another. That would be better for folk who don't have 2 trays, but a royal PITA for 90% of us.

You really don't have to spend much (I know, loan signings right now really don't justify much either) many printers have only one paper cassette and a flip down tray you can use for the legal. You don't have to have a true dual printer.

I'm thinking a decent black laser that could handle 2 sizes could be had for under $200.

The long and the short of it is, we serve the lenders who just insist on long paper...and short.

Re: What we prefer...

The industry has allowed notaries to print on all legal (they want to make sure you're not shrinking the docs to letter size). I started that way, but as my business grew I moved to a dual-tray printer so I can accomodate printing the file the way it is intended. It does save on the cost of paper, but is also a lot more efficient. FYI, I've heard of several moves to try to do away with legal size paper (coming from the paper manufacturers themselves). Most of the world is still operating on the premise that computers & technology will make us paperless.
I sort of chuckle at this one, as this industry is paperless until it get to me!!!

Re: What we prefer...

Thank you all. I have a tray and a flip. I must not know how to operate the printer. I went in and changed each page(s) to legal to letter, etc... I spoke with LFC and they said I could go all legal. Wish I had known that last night. All is well and closing is tonight. Thank you again for all your replies, Bev

Keep in mind....

Some lenders such as Provident actually request their docs to be printed on Letter size.
Then of course the title co. sends theirs over on legal so you are back to square one.

Re: What we prefer...

When attachments are separate for letter and legal, I will print them that way using two printers, one for each, otherwise, I print on all legal. With Countrywide loans, I print the closings instructions on letter using one printer, while at the same time, I print the remaining documents on legal using another printer.

I bought a HP 4250n tray laser printer and second tray on eBay three weeks ago, but, haven't set it up yet.
