Question For West Virginia Notaries
Are you allowed to notarize something that just has a signature line for the notary - with no ack or jurat wording? Just curious :-)

Basic Notary Stuff...
It's pretty much Notary 101 anywhere that the elements of any notarization include the signer being either acknowledged or sworn in to the content and/or truthfulness of the document, as well as date and venue. Otherwise, what are you notarizing?
If no wording appears, you have to ask the signer which wording they wish to use, ack or jurat - you can't decide for them.

Notary language is not required in Maryland. We can "witness" signatures using the procedure spelled out in our handbook. Page 9, Part IV, paragraph 26 spells out the procedure.

What about page 12 - showing examples of the certificates? Isn't that "notary language?" Pages 15-19? or am I off base here?

Yes, you are correct. We can complete acks and jurats also. I was pointing out that notary language is not required for a notarization in Maryland. The post I was responding to, which I quoted, stated that notary language is required for a notarization. It is not in Maryland, and I provided the reference.

We have something like that here on our criminal records check, drives me nuts, since it is a state doc. They even ask for a seal. Called the SOS on it and they said to just attach something. We can now witness a signature and that is what we are doing so I attach that form. To me it is a waste of time and money for the signer if they ( the state police ) insist on a notary signature and stamp and do not even provide the proper wording.
