Thinking outside the box. Hope this helps some.
Everyone knows how often they lose $$ because of not getting docs in time or not being able to accept a job because you will not have time to go back home after 1 signing to print docs and get to another signing. We have an Atty that prints at Starbucks' in between signings. I am a DD man and have never been to Starbucks so I really don't know if all have computer access. I would think he carries paper with him. He tells me he is able to book a lot more signings because of it. There must be other places you can also do this from. I hope this info can help some add to their income.

There has already been an escape from the box!
Several notaries on this forum have had mobile printing capability.
For a couple off the top of my head...check out MargaretFL and Becca's post for complete mobile capability.

Yes, but some can't afford the expense. Just trying to help.

Sorry...I guess I'm missing something,
does Starbucks have printing capability?
**Yes, but some can't afford the expense. Just trying to help.**
I think there are notaries (for instance, CharlesCA) who use the Starbucks and McD's, etc. for connectivity...however, if Starbucks offers some kind of printing set up that would be awesome. Is that what you meant?
Maybe I need a Coke Zero.
(I was just trying to help to regarding the tip to search for posts with Becca and Margaret in them.)

If they do offer it I'm sure there's an additional charge
for use of the printer - can't imagine printing two sets of docs free of charge...I'd bet there's a per page fee - just like at Office Max, Kinkos, Staples, Mailbox Store, etc..

Accepting 90.00 dollars for edocs does not leave enough money to have a mobile office. So anyone that have a mobile office is getting a lot more than that.

Exactly, Starbuck's doesn't print docs
People are using Starbuck's free wireless access to print from their mobile printer.

I know, Al, but Bob also confused me with this:
*I would think he carries paper with him. *
I had to ask if Starbucks has a printer now that you can use if you carry the paper with you.
[Bartender, another Coke Zero please!]

I stay away from Starbucks because they have T mobile
and a very weird program. STarbucks has a minimum charge for T-mobile and it's like an hour regardless of whether you log on for a minute or the whole hour. I've been using a data connection for several years although I still like Wi Fi because I find it to be more reliable than a data card.

"Yes, but some can't afford the expense."
Especially when they are accepting $90 as a reasonable fee.
Let me ask you a question...Would you be willing to PAY for this extra service? I charge a higher fee if the TC can't get me docs on time and I have to print on the road.
As for WiFi connections, NOT a good idea at all. Too many security and privacy issues.

Oops, pressed enter to quickly
I have been advised by two different title company attorneys and an underwriter that if **I** cannot print the docs in a secluded location, that I am not to accept their assignment. They specifically stated that I am not to have Kinkos, Staples, etc. print the document for "obvious" personal and financial information privacy issues.
It is my practice to follow the above recommendations for all my appointments, regardless of the signing service, title company or lenders 'approval' to do otherwise.
Of course, this does not preclude the 'mobile office' concept where the NSA has a mobile setup to print the docs on their printer. I would assume the NSA's car or borrowers home to be considered a secluded location.

Re: Privacy and Security
There are also security issues in WiFi or even your home wireless networks; if anybody really cares enough to download info not meant for them. (This has been in the news recently where people have stolen account and pin numbers outside of ATMs, etc.) This may be overkill re loan documents, but there are some crazy people out there.

I totally agree with Paul.
The other locations (other than private/controlled/secluded) should be used only when nothing else is available.

I carry a lap top with cell modem in car .Recently acquired
a light weight 20+ ppm laser that I keep in my trunk. Down load dox while driving and bring pinter into bwrs house and plug into outlet. Sign dox as they come off the printer. Single tray printer, but I print on legal and cut down if necessary. Only do this for last minute dox or changes. Beats driving back home and don't have cost or security issues of Kinkos, etc.

Is your printer "wireless"? I recently set up with a laptop & aircard for mobility, but am having a logistics issue question about printing docs on the road. It takes considerable time to print 2 sets of loan docs at home. I've heard of notaries toting printers for last minute change to HUD, etc. I'm wondering if it's worth the time/expense?

Re: I carry a lap top with cell modem in car .Recently acquired
Pardon my ignorance of this but does the printer HAVE to be wireless? If it hooks directly to your laptop it's printing from your laptop, correct?
I print at home from my laptop - just as fast as from my desktop. I could be wrong (and I'm SURE I'll be corrected if I am...<G> but I don't believe "wireless" has anything to do with the printer. MMHO

Laptop runs on its own battery....printer plugged into wall (at Starbucks) or both plugged into into power inverter in vehicle.

DON'T hook your inverter to your car battery, very bad idea
You should use a battery isolator (available in any car parts store) and a separate battery to run your inverter: the second battery charges through the isolator. Using your car battery to run an inverter may run your car battery down and may leave you stranded. Additionally a problem in your inverter circuit could damage your car wiring if its not isolated.

Re: DON'T hook your inverter to your car battery, very bad idea
Since I have a Prius, I have often wondered what it would do to my battery...any thoughts?
|
Reply by Charles_Ca on 8/26/08 1:52pm Msg #261864
If you use an isolator it should have no effect. If I
remember correctly the Prius actually uses a regenerative braking system to generate electricity when the brakes are applied and that helps recharge the batteries along with the engine-driven alternator. The isolator isloates the car electrical system from the auxiliary battery so the charging system should only charge the auxiliary battery as its depleted and then revert to only charging the main batteries. However you might want to ask the manufacturer because I don't have specific knowledge of the Prius electrical system. The other alternative would be to make sure that you have the adequate watt-hour capacity in auxiliary batteries to cover your maximum useage and then charge them when you park the car with plug-in battery charger.

Car Tunes hooked it up, they didn't think it was a problem
I only use it when the car is running, otherwise I just have it turned off. But I'll check into this further.

Re: What is the power source?
I had my pure sine inverter installed at a car stereo shop. You have to have the car running while printing or you will run the battery down. I also bought an HP 1320 on E-bay very reasonably (one tray only). It is light enought that I can take it in and out of the car myself.

i called bestbuy today and they said the inverter was like 200 bucks, but suggested I get a bigger alternator, then i called auto zone and they said that yes i would need a alternator with a higher (ampage?) and a new battery does this sound right?

Re: What is the power source?
I bought the inverter on E-bay (sorry I don't remember what I paid for it, but much less than they wanted locally). Then I took it to the local car stereo store (also called around because prices were all over the board). I paid $200 for the installation and cable because I have a van and the inverter is in the far back. Also, search for a post from Margaret/FL about inverters and she gives all the info you need.

I spent around $700 getting a power invertor installed in my car. My wireless air card costs me $29.99 a month. I made back the investment in 3 days. It would take you longer now days. I had 4 signings last week at $150 a pop, all last minute and was able to print in my car. I even printed in my car during our power outage during T.S. Fay last week. Thsi really impressed the Title company. You have to spend money to make money and it was the best investment I ever made.
